Spectators and vital information...
« on: June 24, 2006, 12:02:23 pm »
Hi again, it's me with yet another thing to let you take note of:

I am seeing and hearing too much spectators giving out vital information like locations of structures, players and the amount of kills left to stage advancement. I come from the QuakeWorld community, where spectators could only use teamchat and not talk freely, for obvious reasons. I would either like to see a spectalk option (which means spectators can only use teamchat) or just cut a deal with everyone not to give out vital information when spectating. Anyone caught doing so will recieve a penalty based on his actions.

They could also use teamspeak/ventrilo for that and thats why we need a spec lock option.
Like i've already posted here, there are a few things that should be coded into tremulous.

Yesterday there was some guy in my team who though it would be funny to tell the enemy when we reach the next stage.
I also hate that "where is spawn???" or "where is the reactor?" spam because you usually see dragoon rush in few seconds after that.

Hard coding spectards to be locked in team chat with other spectators would be a great idea. it would keep the majority of people from giving any vital information.  If somone was really wanting to do it any way, they would find a way.

but this would keep moast of the immature players from doing so.

Thing is, a spectator could still float around the level and locate certain things before joining a side and knowing where to go. Locking spectators in place makes them no longer spectators, and you could no longer actually spectate a game, so I don't see any way to fix that.

The subject is not the spectator mode before joining a game, it's about spectators who aren't in a game, who give away vital information via public chat. And that CAN be fixed.

A few people said the wrong thing, so nobody can talk anymore? Seems a bit harsh to me.

Yesterday we had a rejoining griefer on the gamearena servers, where there are no active admins. The problem was fixed by one of us going into spectate mode and watching over anyone building who we didnt know. Without spectator chat, it would not have been possible to catch and kick the griefer before they could destroy the game.

Just mute the offenders, don't penalise everyone.

One time, as a spectator, I observed someone with a C-Kit just standing there, looking at the reactor.

Just to see if he would do it, I said:
"decon reactor now!", and he actually did it.

I'm sorry       .

haha kozak6, that is actually quite funny :]
tell him to type /kill next time :)

No a serious note temporary fix could involve changing spectators font to smaller and to one forced color (grey?)

That doesn't stop them from telling people vital info. And you can already tell if someone is spectating. They have a [D] next to their names instead of an [A] or an [H].

I have never see observers revealing vital info. But maybe info about griefers deconing stuff.
So I dont need to mute observer... but If more people use observer to anoy I will like that option.

Unfortunatly many servers don't have that feature, I hope it becomes standered in the next release though.

I belive its an
  • for observer, besides you can't really penalize everyone for the actions of a minority, maybe just limit their access to information but not their ability to talk with people.
