Empty Servers?
« on: January 06, 2009, 06:29:43 am »
These servers have been around since the dawn of time...
Who owns them? Where are they located? Doesn't anybody pay hosting for them?  ???

I think those are most probably the ones people started on their home computers and didn't bother to give them a name.

As far as I know, if you install Tremulous through a package distribution system (such as apt or yum), a server is automatically started and added to init.

What exactly is "init" if you don't mind clarifying?  :)

It's a *nix thing, the first process started. Kinda the core of the system (besides the kernel). Debian's tremulous package used to include the Tremulous server, and ran it with default settings. That's why a lot of them have massive pings (the one with the largest ping I've seen was ~2500, located in South Africa!)

Wait !  So does that means on those systems, the tremulous server is automatically starting each time with startup services ?  :o

I was wondering that too. So some unsuspecting dude/dudess has a random server blogging down their system? Not that that would cause much lag, but still...

What if someone were to remove and reinstall Trem a couple of times (on a whim perhaps), wouldn't each server be left behind?  :P
