Menu & interface ideas for 1.2
« on: January 24, 2009, 08:10:25 pm »
I have found that the menus in tremulous break the flow of gameplay. I have an idea of how this could be fixed in future releases.

Say you are a granger, and you want to evolve. As long as you hold down Q,  the menu is visible. The menu disappears as soon as Q is released. The menu itself would be a set of circles arranged in a tree formation. Inside the first circle is the granger icon. The circle to the left also has a granger icon, only with a plus. Each subsequent clockwise circle is a larger alien. Advanced forms are another layer out from the central circle. If you mouse over an evolution form and release Q as your mouse is over it, you will evolve.

This same style can be used for building, or buying things from the armory. Aesthetics should of course be different for the humans, but the basic mechanic stays the same.

Very quick mockup below:

Personally, I like the DTMF menus like the one in the Volt HUD better. I'm using binds anyway, might as well use them for this too.

But a better OM/armory menu is a very nice idea (mastering your binds takes time). But there's no need to complicate it like this since the alien evolution is a simple list out of which you need to pick an entry. So I think it would be best if for as long as you keep Q pressed the list would appear on screen and you'd move in it with the mouse wheel and if you left-click you pick an entry. The list should be auto-populated only with things that makes sense (only forms you have enough evos for) and not appear at all if there's nothing you can change in (ie. dretch with no evos); but perhaps emit an error sound in this case.

For humans, simply populate the list with all affordable and equipped stuff, only in two different colors, and let them use left-click to buy and right-click to sell, plus the mouse wheel to scroll.
New to Tremulous? Look up the Wraths Newbie Server in the in-game server list.

In TremFusion/Trepidus, the armory menu will list items you don't have enough money for in red. Also, you don't need to sell your rifle anymore to buy another weapon, it's done automatically.

Seems cool. Why not? Maybe a client-side option?
