Skinning Question.
« on: March 01, 2009, 04:35:24 am »
I understand that you cant go into a server with custom skins but my question is... Isn't there a way to use your own skin on your local computer? To me it dosn't make sense that you can use a custom HUD (that is in the data-1.1.0.pk3 file) on your local machine and still connect to the server. Can someone help me out in this situation? Also is it possible to connect to the server and then load up your skins?

Thanks in advance!  :D

Custom HUDs use assets that are included with Tremulous that were intended for use as HUDs, anyway. A lot of HUDs are just rearranged versions of the default. If you can find, somewhere, an alternate skin for anything that is packed for Tremulous, and was intended for use, then I'm sure you'd be able to use that, but otherwise, the server either has to have the mod, or be running on sv_pure 0.

So is it possible to have the skins load in a .cfg file? Also now that I think about it, I see a lot of huds have a target reticule for the alien team. Wouldn't that be considered cheating since the aliens originally have no reticules?

Thanks in advance!  :D

Perhaps, but since the assets are there (and just not normally used), they are allowed by the engine.

People debated that quite a lot when those huds first came out. It's not really an easy question to answer, but certainly they may be used and discussed and traded freely on these forums. Servers have no way to tell if you are or are not using them.

1.2 alien hud simply has the crosshairs to avoid the issue entirely.
