Increasing Auto-Download Speeds
« on: March 02, 2009, 11:45:41 pm »
How can I increase auto-download speeds?

I am not trying to increase it for people downloading from me, but from me downloading from servers.

Im not sure if the maximum auto-download speed is too low, or whatever, but please help me fix it.

And I don't want an answer like: "increase the maximum speed'. I want an answer telling me  HOW to increase the speed.

I am running on a mac.

The reason i want this is because I am getting like 12kbps on servers that have a lot of custom maps so I lose some playing time on that server.

THX SO MUCH!

You can increase it by reading these forums and not posting threads that already exist.

Downloading the backport increases dl speeds.

http://trem.tjw.org/backport/

Get that or a different one like MG Dev's.

No.
TJW's client is a backport, it copies a few new features (GUID's and http downloads) to the old client.
All the other clients are not backports, but "foreports" or something stupid, porting the old netcode and syscalls to the new client.
Tremfusion is incompatible with 1.1.0.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

First of all, Tremfusion is perfectly compatible with 1.1.0, and it is the only unofficial client that is in active development.
You can use TJW's client if you want, although it is very old (nearly 3 years) and lacking in many features.

Last time I tried it, TF had an incompatible config system, that had be specifically designed to prevent people from changing away from your client.

The mg client is also under "active development".

It was not designed to prevent people from changing away from your client... (lol conspiracy theory) It was designed to separate mod-specific configuration from general game configuration.

The mg client was last updated 3 weeks ago.
Tremfusion was updated yesterday.

Tremfusion is incompatible with 1.1.0.
Please explain how many members of the Tremulous community (including myself) are users of Tremfusion? It is perfectly compatible with 1.1.0.

Of course you're going to get a reply like that from an MG person. So stuck up.

RipeFlesh is the only person who has had anything remotely constructive to add.  If you all can't ACTUALLY help him, then stfu.

infestor1, use the MG client described here

The file you need that will replace the Tremulous.dmg that runs tremulous for the mac can be found here

More documentation than you will probably care to look at can be found here

As I understand it, you will need to download the Tremulous.dmg and replace the Tremulous.dmg that came with your tremulous install.  Don't delete the original though, just in case the downloaded one doesn't work for you.

Keep in mind that not all servers have http downloads set up, so it doesn't always make downloads faster for every server.  But for any server that does have it set up, the downloads will be MUCH MUCH faster.

If this client works for you and you learn a little more about it all, then you can consider trying out more experimental clients.  But I wouldn't recommend it at first :)

edit: There's a pretty strong likelihood that if you post to this thread and are not actually helping him, that I will just delete your post outright.  You have been warned.
