Sounds, triggers, and dynamic light colors.

Say I want a sound to begin when a player steps into an area, and end when (s)he steps out. Is this possible using spawnkeys or another method?

Also, since dynamic lighting isn't supported (unless I feel like turning the whole map into a model and caulking everything), I wouldn't be able to have the color of an area change? For instance, have it lit by a different color light when triggered?

(If an engine change is in need, I think it should be to expand the potential for maps. Old engines support dynamic lighting. It shouldn't be about making the graphics realistic, only adding atmosphere. Making Tremulous tremulous. Of course, though, this isn't going to happen.)
