hosting a server
« on: May 02, 2009, 01:49:37 am »
I have a spare computer lying around, and I am wondering if it would be possible to use that as my server. I would just install trem and the tremded stuff and run it. It would be taking 24 players max at once, and an average of 15 at once. Would it be able to hold up? It's an eMac that I never use, but I want to put it to good use.

And would my ISP get pissed at me for doing this?

It is very likely that your upstream bandwith is far too low for you to host a medium sized Tremulous server.

Also in answer to your other question, server hosting is generally against most isp ToS. Still, besides that and what Bissig said, you should try it anyways.  ;)

only one I can think of off the top of my head that totally denies hosting is comcast.

a friend of mine ran an sshd on a high port (50000 range) so he could use his irssi from elsewhere (he IRC'd from his home linux box) and comcast actually severed his account because you aren't allowed to host *anything* apparently.

My guess would be he was also running torrents etc etc and they were just fishing for reasons to bin the high bandwidth users.
But either way, if comcast are the only ISP in your area, it's probably not worth the risk.
