Transit Station
Part 1/3
Part 2/3
Part 3/3

Private Jay Cool of the 2nd Marine Division out of Toronto, Canada didn't remember where he was. It didn't matter though, he knew he was on a mission and had to act fast, especially against an enemy as terrifying as the Marauders. He felt around at the ground until he could find his marine issued Assault Rifle. Once he found it, he got up slowly, his unprotected head throbbing in pain, and looked at what lay before him. Whatever had happened caused the wall behind him to completely collapse. What was even more troubling were the army recruitment signs that surrounded him, "Tumbo 66 - Destroyer of Worlds", "Only losers still use the older models..."

"What is this?" he wondered, "do they think this is some kind of game?"

Jay moved slowly to the other end of the room where there were a pair of nonoperational escalators. Hesitant at what lay below, he proceeded cautiously down the one to his right, watching his every step. It was at the bottom of the escalator on the white tiled ground where he first found his fears justified: a pool of blood.

"Christ," he breathed, "they must have gotten Freak!"

His assumption was correct. To the left he saw the body of his comrade Matt "The Freak", dead.

After putting his friend to rest, Jay decided to get a better idea of his surroundings. From the looks of it, he was in some sort of station. The Departure Board above him was still operating, giving up to the minute departure times, yet Jay looked around and saw no one but himself. Confused, he turned back the way he came until he arrived at a hallway with a staircase. At the bottom of the staircase he saw yet more blood. He knew what lay ahead wouldn't be a pretty sight, but Freak would have gone on, so he would too.

At the top of the staircase he came to a door. Always the cautious one, Jay sprinted up to the door and jumped back, anticipating a swarm of dretches, yet none came. Instead of dretches, he found something much worse.

It was a generator of some sort, covered in human blood! The blood must have come from dozens of human bodies judging by the inches thick pool that surrounded the generator. He walked to the other side of the room, looking for the source of the blood. Then suddenly, he heard the sound of the oh so agile enemy breathing heavily as they hopped up the stairs towards the door. Jay crouched, and fired a clip into the door as soon as it opened for the first marauder.

Two marauders jumped in immediately, the first severely injured by the 30 round clip that Jay unloaded into it. The second was attempting a flanking maneuver as the first retreated back down the staircase to regenerate. Jay decided to retreat to a better position, and took a chance going through a door he had never been through. The door opened to a long, tall staircase. Jay used the staircase to his advantage and sprinted up, leaving his back vulnerable to the marauder. Fortunately he was able to crouch just in time as the marauder flew over his head.

Jay loaded his second clip into the Rifle and unloaded it into his enemy. The marauder tried bouncing on and off the walls to throw off Jay's aim, but the seasoned vet missed few of his shots. By the end of the clip the mara was squealing in agony, trying to go back down the stairs to escape certain death, but after unloading most of his third clip, Jay put the marauder out of its misery. Jay waited a few moments for the second marauder to appear, but after several minutes it did not show. Jay checked his ammo belt: one more clip, and with the rounds left in his rifle he guessed he had thirty-five, maybe forty shots left. He would be taking a chance if he went after the marauder down there, but he couldn't just hold his position forever. Reluctantly, he continued up the staircase and down the bending hallway until he reached another door.

The room he entered was wide open, with boxes on either side, possibly a warehouse of some sort. At the far end of the room he noticed a railing. He walked over to it and looked over, and realized he was already on the top floor of the complex and still hadn't found any sign of a living human being. He knew the marauders were powerful but surely...

"EEEEYYYOOOOOH!"

A dragoon! Jay knew of the terror of the dragoon, and knew having his life ended by one was no way to die. If only...

The railing! The taunt was getting louder, the end was near.

"See you soon, Freak"

Jay hopped over the railing, and let himself fall, thinking of the new lif

Transit Station: Descent into Madness

“Welcome Jay Cool.” The voice was unrecognizable, but commanded a respect superior even to top generals

“There are some who threaten to end our existence. You must kill them before we can move on to the next stage of our life.”

Before Jay could think he felt himself falling, just like he did off the railing. Instead of certain death, he found himself alive on the floor, and on all six of his limbs.

“Six!? What the hell?”

As if by instinct Jay hopped through the door and crawled onto the side of what looked like a train, although he was no longer certain of anything. Nothing but instinct was controlling his actions now as he climbed up the side of the train and jumped down onto the ground, descending deeper down into the station. The blood soaked walls no longer affected him, his surroundings no longer mattered. He was on the trail of something, although he wasn’t sure what it was. He rounded the corner and leaped down a long, strait staircase into a sandy room. It was there he felt the presence of something unnatural.

It was more than unnatural, thought Jay, it was the greatest of evils. Whatever was around the corner was unaware of him, and Jay knew he could use this to his advantaged. He now positioned himself onto the ceiling just around the corner of the L shaped hallway. Patience is what would guarantee him victory, patience.

As if by plan it rounded the corner, only Jay was unable to move.

“It’s a… human!” Jay gasped.

As if the human heard Jay, it immediately jumped and did a sliding crouch to the opposite end of the hallway and began spraying bullets in Jay’s direction.

“I am one of you, I am a human!”

The human ignored Jay, and continued to fire bullets in his direction, hitting Jay multiple times. In terrible pain, Jay tried to retreat back up the staircase, but the human followed in close pursuit, barely missing as Jay rounded yet another corner. This is when Jay decided to make his move, waiting at the top of the staircase until the human rounded the corner, striking the human’s exposed head, killing him after only two bites.

Before the human knew what hit him, he was on his back, dead.

“We have evolved!”

It was the voice from before! But what did it…?

“The Overmind is under attack!”

Jay again lost control of himself, and he felt compelled to turn around and run back into the train car.

“The Overmind is under attack!”

He could see the opened doorway to the train, jumping, crawling, and sliding his way towards it as fast as possible.

“The Overmind is dying!”

He just made it to the door when he caught the glimpse of a human chasing him down from behind, unloading a shotgun into his back.

Transit Station: Retrieval

Karith Station. It was once the premier destination of the planet, located on a tropical island surrounded by the clearest of waters and hundreds of miles from the nearest landmass. That was an assignment a commander like Blood looked forward to, the whole eastern half of the island serving as a retreat during off hours where he could just relax and forget about the war. A situation like that one wouldn’t last long, Blood knew, and he was right, with Karith Station falling soon after it was established after an infestation of dretches and grangers.

The Station Commander, known to those below him only as Blood, rounded the hallway within Karith Station 2 and walked through the sliding doors into the station’s science lab. This station was quite the opposite of its predecessor, located on the frozen northern pole of the planet. On most planets they would have given up ground operations years ago, but here it was different. Here, within the snow and ice, the marines found the blueprints to a technology far beyond there own. Over the past few years, they have been able to adapt the technology and combine it with their own to make meaningful gains. The energy weapons, battle suits, jet packs, and tesla generators all were helpful, but this latest find may prove to be the turning point of the war.

“Our science department have been reverse engineering this object since you brought it in two weeks ago,” Professor Kay Otic said.

“And you haven’t figured out what it does yet?” asked Blood in his deep, booming voice.

“Not quite yet,” replied Otic, “the best we can tell is the one that you sent in was completely shot. We were able to replicate it to the best of our abilities. Our replica, right over here, was completed last night. We’ve been working all morning to get it ready for its first test run. I called you in to get your permission to go ahead and turn it on.”

“Before you start, can I place these dog tags on the floor next to the device for good luck?” the Station Commander asked.

The professor recognized them instantly, the bloodied dog tags of Blood’s three former squad mates, including his brother Matt. He nodded at Blood and watched him place them carefully on the floor next to the object.

“I wish I was with them on Transit, Otic. I should have been there to die with them. No, I know what you are going to say and I don’t want to hear it. I can grieve how I want. I just hope that their spirits are with us today to give us the luck we need.”

Blood took a step back from the device, glanced at the professor and gave him a silent nod. With that, Otic fiddled with the device for a final time, and made the necessary adjustments needed to activate the replica. Within moments, the tags disappeared from few, and in a brilliant flash, the room filled with the blue glow emanating from the top of the device…

“The Overmind is Dying! The Overmind needs spawns!”

It didn’t matter anymore to Jay what the voice said, he knew he was near death. Half of his backside was torn open, four of his limbs were missing, and he was already fading in and out of consciousness. He barely took notice to the humans running past them through the door, chasing a pudgy creature hopping for its life. It was at this moment, dying on the floor, that Jay was ready to accept death, when the blackness suddenly turned into a brilliant blue…

______________________

Things progressed quickly after that. By the following night the three that perished at Transit were fully recovered from their ordeal. Within a week the marines abandoned Karith Station 2, taking their new technology which they called a Telenode with them. To this day the technology behind the Telenode is not completely understood, although scientists like Kay Otic were able to discover ways to manipulate the technology to not only revive fallen comrades, but to do much more.

Within a year after the discovery of the Telenode, the humans were able to perfect the cloning process. The clones were put into military service after a process of selected cloning which resulted in the average clone being able to only speak the phrase, “Come on!” A number of other drawbacks were soon discovered, including the clone’s fear of the unknown which resulted in many clones huddled behind their poorly built defensive structures awaiting their demise. Despite these letdowns, the clones were a major success, with a complete eradication of all alien beings off the planet Earth within Jay Cool’s lifetime.

__

The men at his side chasing the Dragoon were using mass drivers, a great weapon when the number one concern was aiming at something from a distance. Jay knew better, preferring the reliable shotgun in anticipation for the close quarter ambush that was ahead. Jay knew the enemy better than anyone alive, he was one of the enemy. The marine to his right fell instantly to a dretch as they ran out into the desert. The one on his left managed to dodge the dretch intended for him, but was soon felled by an airborne marauder.

Jay was already acting when the first marine fell, unloading his hot lead into the attacking dretch. The second dretch was met with a similar fate, and the marauder, watching how quickly his cousins were defeated, decided to retreat out of sight.

Jay took a moment to analyze the situation. Although he was outside under the orange sky, the area was walled off with a blue force field, preventing any escape by jetpack. A large structure was located in the middle of this outdoor area where countless numbers of the enemy waited for their moment to strike. His base was destroyed, and it was unlikely he would be able to kill off the remaining eggs and grangers left in the area. He would have to make a choice on where he would make his last stand.

Jay backed into the hallway he came, resting himself against the wall in anticipation for the upcoming wave. The Advanced Tactical Combat Simulator sure lived up to its name, Jay thought.

“Until my dying day,” Jay said aloud, “I will train in this simulator. Oh you will be so sorry if you come back, because Jay Cool will be there to kick your alien ass!”

Very impressive. I like the twists that you add to your stories. It might not be realistic but your story relates more to the game.
