tremulous won't start (need default.cfg?)

I installed tremulous through the ubuntu repositories (game worked fine), decided to try out the TJW stuff.  Followed the guide to install it (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=10437.0).  Clicking on tremulous.x86 from nautilus or from the app menu results in nothing happening.  No error message, no display, the program doesn't even try to run.
Like a noob, I accidently deleted the original tremulous file leaving only the tremulous.x86 file in the folder, but that shouldn't make a difference for running TJW.

BTW, I also tried with mercenariesguild version and same thing.  I also remembered to use check "allow executing as an application".

EDIT:  (I noticed these errors in terminal)
fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000500
Z:\usr\lib\tremulous\tremulous.x86: error while loading shared libraries: libopenal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

first of all, don't run trem in wine.
second of all, install openal and symlink libopenal.so.0 to libopenal.so.1.

Just out of curiosity.. What does indicate that he is using WINE?

Bandit224

I symlinked (ln -s /usr/lib/libopenal.so /usr/lib/libopenal.so.0) and removed Wine Loader in properties for install executables using this program.  When I click on the file, still nothing happens.

error message (Couldn't load default.cfg)

I don't have ubuntu running at the moment but if I remember correctly when you install Trem from the respository a script file is installed that sets all the paths, etc correctly. Modify that script file to point to the new Trem and run it from that script file. Hopefully someone who has ubuntu installed can explain it in greater detail.

Uninstall the package and use the installer on trem.net, the ubuntu package puts random bits everywhere and makes it really hard to change anything.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.
