Game temporarily freezes
« on: July 07, 2006, 08:59:22 pm »
OK so I'm an alien; likely a goon, and I pounce in to attack a group of humans, and then jump away with a decent amount of health...often on my escape (or while I'm still attacking) my screen will freeze for about 2 or 3 seconds and I'll be dead or on my last legs when the screen starts moving again (my goon has not moved on the map either).  So this has seemed to be happening a lot for me lately and its really frustrating when I save up, buy a tyrant, run at someone, and then die 10sec after I finally got enough evos to get my beast.

I don't believe this is a problem with my hardware...I have a gig and a half of ram, 40gb free on hard disk, and a 6600 GT.  I'm able to run half-life 2 with pretty good specs and itunes as well as other apps simultaneously.  Is Trem a higher demanding program than it appears?  I guess while I get this freeze there are a lot of things on screen (I think so (most of the time)).  Um, I also have comcast cable, which runs exceedingly fast compared to what it's supposed to run at...any help???

I had a better ping than most, and I asked other people but they weren't getting the same problem

I have the exact same problem. I have met two or three other people who have it, one of whom was Halo Slayer.
Odin's suggestion (/rate 25000) didn't help. I believe it is because of my connection, because most of the time when it happens the lagometer says, right in the middle of the screen, "Connection Interrupted." My ping is fine, around 95, and so is my FPS, around 30-60.
I'd be a (much?) better player without it and it can be extremely frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas?

For some uncertain reason some servers lag a lot. I'm not sure if this is due to g_unlagged switched on or something fishy going on in the new qvms. But I've noticed several servers with me having nice 50 -150 ping, but still got me stuck in walls, or get glued to humans. This is frustrating since I don't seem to damage them at all.

http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3903&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=lag
the same problem is described here. I've asked around and a few other people have confirmed that they are experiencing the same problem. However most of the coders deny this is the qvm's fault. I cannot say where the error resides but I really suspect it's the new qvms ( [T]Base upgraded something on their server and right after that I couldn't enjoy playing there anymore ).

When everyone in the server is lagging (usually lasting about 10 seconds), I am stuck the entire time. Perhaps while other people get low FPS and I get stuck.
EDIT: I tried playing UT2004 and Soldat online, but I didn't get stuck. Therefore it must be Tremulous' fault.
EDIT: I tried installing another Tremulous, so that I had all the default settings when I connected, but I still got stuck.

I also have a problem with the lucifer cannon:
When I try to charge it up and release to fire, it doesn't fire. Instead, it continues charging up to a certain point and then fires, as if it has a mind of its own. Clicking while it is charging changes nothing. As far as I know, it happens on all servers.
EDIT: Fixed itself

Another problem:
I took a few screenshots ingame and now I can't find them. In #tremulous on Quakenet, I was given a few possible paths, but none of them exist. I was also told "if you're using Windows, go figure." Is this a common problem?

EDIT: Oh my god, the chronic spiking fixed itself! :D

Hi everyone,

unfortunately I have a similar problem (if not the same ).
When playing Trem it often happens that suddenly the lagometer shows a rise and then displays a ping of 999.
At the same time I get a "connection interrupted"-message in the middle of the screen and that blue "unplugged"-sign in the lower right corner.
It usually lasts 3-5 s but during that time I'm completely stuck and others can shoot me like a sitting duck (...and believe me, they do... ).
And it doesn't matter what server I'm playing on. Sooner or later it'll happen. Sometimes I can play for a few minutes without interruption and then again I get it 4 times a minute.

While trying to find the cause of this incident, I've logged on to a terminal with STRG-ALT-F1 and started top.
Every time when I get one of those interruptions I immediately switch to this console only to find that Xorg has stepped up to the second place just below Trem for the duration of this connection interruption (although cpu percentage is only between 3-5 %)
After that it falls back to somewhere in the middle.

It appears to me that this "connection interrupted"-message could be because of xorg doing something.
Xorg version is  7.1.0-16 (current Debian stable/ etch)

I have to mention that I am experiencing  this problem since I started playing Trem under Linux (Debian etch).
I never had (and still don't have) this problem under Win 98SE, so I think it is safe to say that my connection and/ or hardware are not the cause of this problem.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this ?
If I forgot some important information then let me know.

it's your connection, either it sucks or someone else is using it to download files large enough to cause you to lag.

At least Lava read my post correctly.

Now I just noticed something today that I haven't been quite aware of before:
Whenever I get this "connection interruption"-msg, I'm frozen in place BUT I can still see others moving within line of sight and I hear the noise around me.
I can even see new chat messages appearing.

So my internet connection (via router) is most certainly working.
It appears that this problem has to do with the system, as pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 to have a look at top always shows an increasing activity of Xorg .

I will have to check this with other games now.

then you either have too much fps for your rate and cl_maxpackets, or you don't have enough upstream bandwidth (either because someone else is using it or because you don't have enough in general), the more likely of the 2 is the former. try /rate 25000 and /cl_maxpackets 125

Concerning upstream bandwidth:
I have a DSL connection which I've never having any problems with when playing games like UT and the like under Windows over the past 6 years.
Needless to say that there are no downloads in the background or another computer using the connection when I play Trem.

Rate has already been set to 25000 from the beginning and about a week ago I changed maxfps to 43.
I'll try changing maxpackets from 30 to 125 although 30 works just fine for Trem under Windows.

It appears to me that this "connection interruption" occurs between the Xorg-xserver and Trem as it's client.
