Author Topic: How do you bend thin, cylindrical brushes (Creating bar fences) [SOLVED]  (Read 5059 times)

Well I've always been curious as to how maps do that common effect of bending brushes so seamlessly. Such as Karith, and their bar fence things:

Notice how the bars are perfectly rounded and bend so nicely.

Or Nexus6 and the pipes.

I thought I had it down when I read over Bubba's Bending Columns Tutorial. But, I later found out that I can't really use that technique to bend very small brushes (such as creating the fences). Also, his tutorial only teaches you how to bend SQUARE brushes, not cylindrical brushes. Also in his tutorial, the brush bends, but it is still curved throughout the whole remainder of the brush. I'd like to have my brushes bend at the given point and then travel straight throughout the remaining distance.

Can anyone explain how to do it? Or provide some tutorial on how to do it? Thanks :P.

He simply uses more than one patch mesh, of course! He uses long straight ones for the straight parts and curved ones for the curved parts.

What does that do? Automatic curving?

Amz; Hit 'V', it adds more verticies. So you can bend the pipe some more.

Ah ok, i get it :)

Why dont they have an auto bend? It cant be hard to code :( It would make my life mapping so much easier.

Because it only takes a couple of seconds to bend a pipe... (Then you can just copy&paste it)

Some reading:

Tip of the day: when editing patch with V, you'll notice pink dots and
green dots. The patch will always touch a green dot,
it doesn't have to touch a pink dot. The pink dots control the curvature.

When you're aligning multiple patches and or brushes, make sure
you align the green dots. Also, it is not always possible to align them perfectly.

(For those who remember nano-alpha1: although they seemed allright in radiant,
the curved corridors had patches on the floor that didn't align properly.)
