Hi people.
My name is tuxu and you can usually find me playing on steam servers of mods like empires-mod, Natural-Selection mod or just the average CS:S servers.
I found this build of tremulous through a post someone left for some game after i googled "fps/rts".
Just wanted to say good job to the developers and the community (i know how important the community's input from empires-mod).
Might i propose that someone would compile a downloadable map pack if there isn't one yet?

if there is one, a sticky link would be great.

Thanks people, c u on the servers.

- Tuxu.

HAI

what do you mean by map pack? All the maps released, or a select few?

I meant as much maps as possible. I saw that there is a map deposite site but one must download them one by one. the whole DL process is, as they say, "Teh suck".

If i was managing such a deposite i would get all the files in one big RAR file, even just on "store" compression level so people could set up one huge download instead of tons of small ones, I mean that the archive should be added and not replace the single map DL links.

The reason I've offered it was because every time i had (or should i say - have) to download a new map it takes a long time.

The game manages to DL maps only as fast as 5kb per sec. On other utilities i get up to 1.5MB per sec, as I've said; I'm playing on css with no problem.

Perheps the problem is with me, i really dont know because im new here.

Is this just my problem or the game really is limited in that way?

BTW, the only reason LämmelKönig is here is because he is on my steam friends list and i've sent him the tremulous link through skype the second i've found it, because we both played empires-mod and it kinda reminds of it - giving that both games are RTS/FPS combo.

Open in game console and do:

/seta cl_wwwDownload "1" -> Press return

Updated client would be smart. Either get one from the MG site or a multi client installer from here:

http://gutci.googlecode.com/files/GUTCI_V1r6-M.exe

Map packs make no sense, since all the maps including the crappy ones or the other never played ones would come in at a range of some gigabytes.

I got the impression that he already had auto downloads on but could not get a decent download speed. I also have the problem that maps don't want to autodownload at a reasonable speed i.e the round is over when you join. Luckily I have more patience than most and a good feel for which maps get playtime so picking the ones on the rotation for the servers i regularly play on is not too much of a problem.

If it's that slow you must be using the vanilla client, download an updated one TJW or better. (Should give you speeds up to and around 150Kb/s)

If you really want all maps that ever existed try looking here; http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=10394.0

Or however fast you can download them over the web, as that's what it's doing.

Map packs are kinda hard to work out, as every server uses a different set of maps (And if you download every single one the client crashes ::)).  Some servers offer map packs, but the best bet is to get a client with http downloads as then you can generally download maps in just a few seconds.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Hi Tuxu. Welcome to Tremulous!

As someone who has played Empires Mod quite a lot and Tremulous even more, I'd like to help you by comparing the two game styles from my experience.

Firstly, I'd say that there's a whole lot less of the RTS element in Trem than there is in Empires. This is a good thing if you don't want your game ruined by a single bad commander. This is a bad thing if you want more long term strategies and evolving conflicts.

Most public games in Trem have little in the way of tactical building and since anyone can build with the teams build resources (which are fixed from the start and don't diminish) if someone does build the majority of the time this person doesn't know what they're doing and get's complained at (sort of like the commander in Empires only on a more individual basis). There are various measures against this sort of thing, most notably commands like '!designate' and '!denybuild' so that admins can identify who should and shouldn't build. There's also '!revert' for when someone griefs by deconning the reactor/Overmind/spawns etc. (sort of like dumping the CV in the enemy base or off a cliff). For this reason and many more I highly recommend downloading TJWs Backport to replace your executable as you won't be bale to get admin and certain bug fixes without it.

If strategic gamepley is what you're looking for then your best bet is joining a clan (of which there are many in Trem) or just sticking to a group of friends who you know are able to work with their teammates. Public games tend to be much more of a frenzy and because the enemy gains upgrade points from killing your teammates, the weaker players in your team will undoubtedly 'feed' the enemy which can lose you the game.

Also note that this game is open-source and highly modable and so many of the features I've tlked about can vary wildly from mod to mod (e.g. TremX, MGdev etc).

In my opinion, it isn't the rts element that makes Trem fun. It's more of an added bonus if you have a game with real teamwork and strategy. Most of the time you just enjoy the gripping alien-vs-human combat mechanics which can be tactical but on much more of a split second basis.

It's often useful just to find out what add-on maps are in the normal rotation of your favorite servers, and then download those. Check the server's forums for more info. Welcome to Trem.
