Can't join humans? (Newbie question, please help.)

I downloaded Tremulous a week or two ago, and I've had a recurring problem: as soon as I join a server, I can't join the humans team though it's not full. When I try to join, it says the team's full, though others on the server have verified that it's not full. Help?

I know. I asked if there were any spots open and the host said yes, but I still couldn't join...

you can't join a team if it would cause a difference of more than one player.
