Suggestion: Identify your team mate(Humans)
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:22:37 am »
Hi to all,

I am new to this game. But not with the game play. I try to play both sides. As playing human, play on line with your remote buddy out there, I got hard time to identify which is which. You need to locate the person so that his name will appear.

Is there a way that we could easily identify our buddies or out team mate? We could assign people for specific position doing the tactics, like doing tournament match.

I know that human character is just a clone. Not like with quake or counterstrike, before you jump into the situation you choose your character's appearance. And from other forum, it says that you need to...in order to have that. And that is the coding. Well, what if, there is a small username, enough we could read at some distant, on the humans head. This way we could identify our buddies even not pointing with your crosshair.

To the developers, putting the ID on top of the player is easier than to create a model of characters. But of course, only friends can see it. Like humans can see the ID of humans as well as aliens can only see the ID of aliens.

Thank you for hearing my suggestion.

What?

You mean, something like the name that pops up when you get close to someone and you're looking at them?

Why can't you do that now? Of course, people are total idiots, but you can't fix that. Sorry.

I know that human character is just a clone. Not like with quake or counterstrike, before you jump into the situation you choose your character's appearance.
Really? I hadn't noticed, actually. Are the aliens all the same, too?

Unless you have the hand-eye coordination of a chimp, it doesn't take a lot to flick your crosshair over to people and identify them. (The first bit of this I'm going to ignore, because it really doesn't make sense.)

To the developers, putting the ID on top of the player is easier than to create a model of characters. But of course, only friends can see it. Like humans can see the ID of humans as well as aliens can only see the ID of aliens.
Why is that better than what is currently implemented?

P.S. You can use teamchat by hitting 'Y' and ask your friend where he is.

This is very simple to understand. To rephrase it, I am new to Tremulous. But the gameplay is not because it is same with other fps like Alien vs Predator or Counterstrike.

To give you more detail, I play together with my friend(newbie too). But before playing online tremulous, we have opened a skype call. Instead of typing asking where is his location, I just ask where he is. This way is faster than typing like the way you suggest

Easy for you to say this maybe because your good enough, unlike us.

I know that human character is just a clone. Not like with quake or counterstrike, before you jump into the situation you choose your character's appearance.

Humans are always the same character unless he have battlesuite. Aliens have many stage of evolution, unless you stay and you dont want to evolve. Maybe you have no friends so identify the position of your team mates is meaningless to you.

The point here is that, it is easier to have it see rather than you point your cursor just to identify

Basicallyl this is just a suggestion. Is there a problem giving a suggestion? Thank you if you consider my suggestion.

@Baconizer
Maybe you are a Developer or a Speaker for the developer to have this answered. But anyway I respect your opinion.

In the map there are a lot of people playing. Some you know, some you dont. Most likely you will stick close to your "known" friends. Or if you are a teamleader in a guild, you could check your team mates position, crucial for your tactical assault.

Have you seen organize group squad doing assault. Each have designated position and task to accomplish the goal, destroying your enemy's base. Tremulous is a tactical game in order to win. Not just rush! You need to be organized, and have communication to beat the enemy.

So having this feature is easy to identify your team mate.

Uhmm. Okay.

This is very simple to understand. To rephrase it, I am new to Tremulous. But the gameplay is not because it is same with other fps like Alien vs Predator or Counterstrike.
I've never played either of those games, but I'm fairly certain the game play isn't the same.

Why can't you do that now? Of course, people are total idiots, but you can't fix that. Sorry.

If you're a complete newbie, you shouldn't be telling other people what to do, or even be in most tournaments (unless you're spectating, of course.) Have you ever played a game from the "Battlefield" series? What I'm guessing you want is something that loosely resembles the "commander view." While it was very nice when people were actually working together, the majority of the time no one did that. They were all off doing their own thing and pretending to be a headless chicken. What makes you think Tremulous would be different?

Humans are always the same character unless he have battlesuite. Aliens have many stage of evolution, unless you stay and you dont want to evolve. Maybe you have no friends so identify the position of your team mates is meaningless to you.
How did you know I don't have any friends!?  :'( :'( :'( :'( I NEED A HUG

I am not a developer, or a spokesperson for the developers, or a moderator, or <insert-other-thing-here>. Whatever I think/do/say has nothing to do with Tremulous development.

While Tremulous is supposed to be a team game, and have matches work as you have described, that doesn't usually happen. (Of course, if the people you're playing with are all friends or clanmates, it will probably work that way, which is why I don't usually play normal public games.)

There's nothing wrong with a suggestion. But your suggestion wasn't very clearly put (probably not entirely your fault), and I don't think it would really improve Tremulous at all. Most likely, all it would do is clutter up your screen.

Well, how about if there would be a hot key to invoke that feature..That way it will not clutter in your screen. I understand that would be messy most likely when situation strikes.

The easiest way for you and your friends to achieve what you want(as I understood it) is for you to play more together and to name the different areas of the maps. For example atcs: You might call the middle area "the middle" if you want to be more precise you might say "middle left" or "inside middle bunker" or "middle roof". Call the areas whatever you want but gradually you will all get to know the maps well enough that your own terminology will work for you and you will be a decent team. It boils down to this: fix your gameplay and tactics and not the game.

TS/Mumble/Ventrillo is also a solution to this problem.
