enemy hp after death
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:32:12 am »
I've seen on a lot of servers, when you die you get a message like:

your killer, someguy, had 25hp

This is a neat idea, except it doesn't mean much when you're in an epic battle and then someone else takes you out. It would be cool if this was added into the official game, except it would tell you the damage of the person you last did damage to. E.g.

Your last target, someguy, had 12hp.

That would tell you how close you were to killing, which I think is the point of the message.

the feature isn't standard and technically reduces balance

It gives you information to which you have no right, and is therefore a stupid idea.

It's an extremely good idea during practices with devmap.

Why don't I have any right to that information?

Because getting a tip on how much hp an enemy has left and then telling your team is pretty fucking stupid. You shouldn't be able to know what they've got right to the number unless you're fighting alone and with, realistically, a blaster.

But you COULD just learn to judge shit on your own and stop asking for stupid shit just because you haven't learned to play yet. I don't know if that's as good for you as a server feature that shouldn't be there for regular games or formal competition.

Well that's all really theoretical. I don't know how it looks in scrims, but in public games I haven't seen any kind of "abusing" this feature. I also never felt "abused" by someone else. Can be cvar toggle after all.

It's also pretty fucking stupid for the aliens to let out a groan when badly injured ;) This isn't any different to be honest except that it's a touch more accurate (if you're not groaning then what's the point of someone reporting your hp? You're not likely to die soon).

But you COULD just learn to judge shit on your own and stop asking for stupid shit just because you haven't learned to play yet. I don't know if that's as good for you as a server feature that shouldn't be there for regular games or formal competition.

If you can judge how much hp an enemy has left then what's the big deal about displaying it on your screen? If a player can easily judge it then it can't be much of an advantage after all.

People's curiosity is the reason for the the feature.  It is a form of feedback and helps players understand what is happening in the game.

How about when a weak goon retreats, sits around a corner, and takes you out before you get a shot off upon coming around? But you see that he's got 40 hp left, which you could not see any other way. This is pretty common really. I'd say it's even more important when discussing a human who shoots a dretch from far off, but the dretch gets to know his hp. You're thinking too much on direct battles that end with one dying and the other being hurt. It's a bit deeper than that, and I could post quite a few other example scenarios, if they weren't obvious.

Sure, it hasn't been abused, and yes, MAYBE it helps the newer players out a bit. But c'mon, you've gotta be retarded to not realize what it means when an alien or human makes certain noises. That's something you probably learn in a day. Basically, by its current use, this feature is practically useless except for telling someone, "Damn! You only had 1 hp?"

Exactly my point Dracone. It doesn't add anything to game play but it's also not abusable. There's no real reason to exclude it but then again there's not a very strong reason to include it either. You'd only bother adding it for the coolness factor really.

I'm retarded.

This is reminds me of the Chomper's UI and how everyone bitched about how it was hax and we know who won that argument.  We wouldn't be discussing this if people didn't ask 'how much hp did you have left.'

It is very abusable and I have abused it. So no.

The one in a hundredth time you actually get the alien so low you need to know how much health he had - consider just asking the guy.
