And the brightness option under system doesn't work (well it does a little bit, but it's not working optimally - I can switch the brightness lower, but when I get it higher it comes up with an error) I remember there was a way to do it from console. How can I do it?

Search and behold! There is lots of topics about this.

Anyhow. You are using vista? Then set compatibility to "Windows XP Service Pack 2" in the properties of the tremulous.exe file. Should solve the problem. Worked for me.
