Servers evading master filter
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:17:20 am »
According to the news master ignores the servers that doesn't report a hostname. However I see some nameless servers. Is it a bug on the master server side?, Does the master allow servers that reports a null hostname? or Do they report a fake hostname to the master?
But in any case, IMHO, Those servers evade the filter on purpose and should be blocked.

AFAIK they do report a name, just one that doesn't show up.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Starting next Tuesday (the 18th) we will also be extending this same restriction to the default 1.1 master, so you may find that if you do not use a more reasonable name your players will no longer be able to see you on the server list. Note that this is not an invitation to name your server something else ridiculous, and if we find that people are continuing to use similarly illegible or homogeneous names, we will further restrict the acceptation criteria, or manually delist individual servers if necessary.
I think I got that part wrong. Sorry
So, as long as you report a hostname( even if it is not human readable or visible), you are on the safe side.

Why not just create a name for your server and keep it?

For the brain dead:
I look up this just for you.
I clicked on the first link on that page, and I typed in "Tremulous Server" and it spat out "Vulture's remorse"  :o a server name

  • Some servers only have boxes in their name.
  • Some custom clients filter out all boxes.
This can make servers still appear nameless.

Doesn't trem 2.0 keep you from using boxes in your name?  That won't be a problem for much longer?

1.2 clients *ignore* servers with names that are blank or contain any nonprinting characters.

The boxes aren't even so much a big deal, its all the completely dead servers that make it so we have 150+ servers in our lists.  80% of those servers in those lists get 0 traffic and most of them are probably made for one time use and just left around.  It is kind of irrtating and those should of been flushed ages ago.

Yeah, I meant 1.2.
And, not all noname servers are home, crappy servers.  There are quite a few noname servers that our quite good, but grant it they are starting to get names now..
