1.2 sprint improvement suggestions
« on: December 23, 2009, 04:29:39 pm »
I like the "new" sprint control - sprint toggle. Very handy considering I have to use one more button for dodge. But there's a problem with that - blackout, stamina loss.

I don't want to suggest increasing stamina for humans - I think it's fine. My idea is to not let player sprint when stamina is less than x. Like with jump - you can jump to certain stamina level, then you have to wait. I hope you get the idea.

Another thing, I think quite connected with previous one, is the hud - when you run under certain stamina level there's no way to see if you are currently sprinting or just running. Only thing you can do is to run move forward a bit and see if you keep slowing down or not. I suggest adding an icon for sprinting instead of overusing harry potter's symbol.

And the last one, but I think it's a bug rather than intended feature - you can't toggle sprint while flying with jetpack.

that's actually how it used to work (because i misinterpreted how 1.1 worked when i was implementing the new sprint), and people complained. instead of changing it back to how it was in 1.1 (you could continue sprinting until you black out, but you can't start sprinting below 0 stamina) norf decided it made more sense to not restrict when you can start sprinting.

Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?

It actually made more sense with 1.1 logic. Especially because the "springting below 0" results in a slower sprint and the crosshair wobble.

Even in RL you cannot just start running when you are barely catching your breath. On the other hand, if you were running already, you can get yourself to the "point".

It also prevented newbies from oversprinting and ending up in "everything is black, I got killed, wtfbug" case.

That bothers me too. We'll have to make sure the new HUDs make this clearer.

May i suggest another way of making sprinting more visible? Increased screen wobble, like you were really making leaps. It works in other games, to show you are running.

I like these ideas :D Good suggestions on this because I also have trouble telling if the little lightning bolt is flashing or not. I often find myself facing a goon, unable to dodge because I've been unknowingly sprinting the entire time.
It's not a terribly drastic increase in speed either D: so if you're not really paying attention you'll find yourself out of stam and really in a tough situation sometimes.

I like the 1.1 stamina toggle because it turns off when you stop, so you can always know if you are sprinting or not without looking at the HUD. So pressing ALT (or whatever button you have for it) always starts sprint, and stopping for half a sec always stops it.
