A Suggestion to Trem devs - hold a mapping contest

Started by SlackerLinux, February 23, 2010, 01:15:51 AM

SlackerLinux

im thinking the devs should hold a mapping contest like Tremcentrals one with mostly the same conditions for the aim of getting some 1.2 balanced maps.
they could maybe offer a prize of being included in the default install(maybe with some conditions like if the winning map lags like hell it doesn't get included etc) or something.

whatcha think? i think the mappers might go for it with the prize of being included in the default install and the devs should get 5-10 maps that have been balanced for 1.2's different gameplay

Very good idea! Now, if only someone implemented scriptable entities...

YAH.

Also, whilst it is a good idea, there have been many good maps since the original tremulous (ie pulse) that could be included in the competition.

I think the OP means a competition where the map is begun on a certain date and is completed on a certain date.

perhaps, but if you want top quality work, it would be better not to have a time limit. Then again, I see the point that everything needs to be done on time so everyone can be assessed...

Pulse has allready been created... I assume the purpose of this contest would be to 1. inspire mappers to create high quality maps, and 2. get new good maps released with 1.2.

As Pulse is not new, and afaik will be included in 1.2 (and if it won't be than entering it in a contest won't do any good of course) so things like this won't happen.

And OP never mentioned anything about a date, although of course there would be, you can't hardly have a competition without a finish now can you?

Unfortunately there are like 5 mappers here who can do commercial grade maps, and many have moved on/probably not interested in trem mapping anymore. Then again its all up to the devs

This is a great idea. However i have a few things i want to say.

Give ALOT (im thinking months) of time for the competition. None of the mappers should feel pressured, or they'll produce a rushed map, that wont be as good as it can be.

Add all the maps to the 1.2 server rotation (maybe have a minor screening process, where you discount any ones with severe problems.

Get everyone to vote :)

Of course, the opposite could be said: too much time can inspire apathy. I also like the idea of a large group of judges, rather than a small group of extremely biased judges.

However: whatever happens, I am not getting involved. Other people can whore out their maps to the community this time.

May the worst map win.

I wanted to do this once, but apparently I'm too stringent  :-\

No stock textures is a bit hard. But I think the problem mostly wasn't the rules, it was the tremulous community. There were a few mappers who were put off by the rules, but just about every Tremulous map contest advertised on these forums that I've seen (and I think I've seen most) have not done well in terms of numbers of entries. :/

Yeah...no stock textures is kinda lame...
Personally though, I would try for a mapping contest.

The real draw for Slackers proposal is that the winners map *will* be included in 1.2, giving the mapper alot of exposure, which would make it worth it for people like odin, tanker, taiyo etc. Also *no* stock textures is a bit weird, because you CAN make unique looking maps with default textures (not to blow my own horn but ive been told that my map waveform is one of the best looking maps out there, which ONLY uses default textures). I think there should be no rules, simply the date to finish it and may the best map win. If even the winners map isnt up to commercial release standard (which I think would be hard with so many talented mappers) you could still include it in the 1.2 release but not in a standard rotation

Outlawing defualt textures is a bad move. I can understand why you want to do it, but default textures do not make clone maps (all the time).

Theres no logic in outlawing default textures either, as even if a crappy atcs2 came out or a arachnid3, they'd obviously be voted against.

JUST DO IT KHALSA. AND DO IT NOW.

SlackerLinux

didn't see that mapping contest thread before its a pity it didn't happen maybe with the chance to get into 1.2 and loosening that texture rule slightly and you might get somewhere if you ever want to try again. im not a mapper so i wont be entering(i have no talent for designing pretty things) but im sure there's still quite a few good mappers lurking in the shadows of the forums even some who have been absent for a while might reappear.

good to see this thread hasnt died yet
