How to update models in trem?
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:15:23 pm »
I think updating the models in trem would be a very good idea.
It wouldn't be very hard,
get somebody to draw a reference image for each of them,
model them in a somewhat middle range poly count,
texture them, rig then convert the animations to vertex keys.
However getting that into trem and having it work is something I don't know nor understand.
I feel like it's a rather simple project minus getting them into trem that would add a lot of life into the game.
The current UV maps/textures look like pixel art,
I feel like we could keep the aliens the same looking while adding more detail,
have more polys, better textures and have some massive improvement.
Because it would be a visual mod the client would be effected,
and other than better looking models it would otherwise operate the same.

If it's not "that hard'
I seriously think we should start a visual mod for this.
I can model, rig, UV unwrap and animate(very well) in Blender well.
I can't draw references,
code or draw up UV Maps though.

Oh yes, making new models for tremulous might be easy but they wont match your expectations if they were just made the way you said it ie. "just like that". That kind of models wont add anything positive to game looks. Those kind of things take long months to reach level of quality we are talking about.

Also note that I've made a tutorial on the exporting models... its pretty weak but it is here ::)

The current UV maps/textures look like pixel art,

Are you serious? "Pixelart"? They are masterpieces in what quality you can achieve using such small textures, try do better and you will see what I mean.

Another thing, have you heard about tremulous 1.2? It will have at least half of models redesigned.
View some of them here.

It's not that difficult,
it would definitely take time to redo all of them however it's not some form of unattainable feat.
I am not talking about doing what is on "Trem Silver" thread(No offense to the thread starter),
i realize it takes along time to model, make sure you have good topology and such.
I've been using Blender for long enough that anything overoptimistic idea will usually get crushed for one reason or another.
Currently I am working on a animated short with Blender,
I thought 6 months was long enough and so far it's not.
That's like project number one thousand,
hopefully I will finish one sometime......

Animation isn't terrible,
it's the one thing I am good at and feel like I could do it in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for the link,
I'll read the whole thing because this is interesting to me.

I've already stated I can't do anything like that,
I understand that it took a long time to do that plus I can't draw worth beans and that makes it even worse.
I shouldn't call it pixel art,
more of a low res UV map.

Yes I have heard about 1.2. and saw that clip a while ago.
It doesn't seem like they have touched the alien models at all and who knows when 1.2 will come out?
Plus if they don't touch the aliens then the need will still be there for this hypothetical visual mod.

No word on whether we'll get a new human model or not, but since we're getting alien "chompers", if you're going to redesign the aliens, I'd work closely with Stannum or at least get input from him, since his concept art is going to be defining a lot of detail already.

I also realize that this is the internet, but even more so this is the forum for a video game on an internet, then even beyond that this is TREMULOUS forums the Satan version of all video game forums for a video game that is ON the internet.

new human model
has been around longer then chompers models. As most of weapons are made also I'm guessing that there will new models for every alien class. Who knows, maybe Stannum plans to remodel everything from ground up.

jm82792: why do you quote me and write nothing but that. Also another thing this is not a thread oh having or solving any issues - it's so called: mod idea.

He did write, he just didn't use quote tags properly.

From what I know having aliens models officially redone is unlikely, because of animations (you'd have to redo them all too). Still having someone willing to redo them despite that fact would be great. Not only because we'd have, probably, higher quality models, but also because it'd be possible to do LODs easily.

I wouldn't expect any dev response in this thread honestly. The best thing you can do now is IMO posting some of your work in Models forum, so people know what they can expect from you. You might also want to join IRC, get known there, ask right people if you can help.

Why can't we do LOD now?
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

I can do organic modeling but there are people that would exceed me so much that it's not something I'd like to do.
I was more or less stating it's a simple task if you find a willing person that's good.
I'm really interesting in animation for trem,
I've only done character animation not repeatable walkcycles and such.
However I can easily learn it and am willing to animate for any serious trem project.
