Lost my GUID
« on: April 11, 2010, 01:31:21 pm »
Well I had to reinstall tremulous for the 5-7th time out of my 3+ years of playing because I am still a freaking newb when it comes to finding the right file to mess with when I need to change something in trem (trem is the only thing I have problems with since it always seems to be changing) and lost my GUID for the 4th time (I was lucky the other times I reinstalled, don't ask me why some times I keep my GUID and sometimes I don't I wouldn't know what to tell you) I have read some info on lost GUIDs and found that you need to have your qkey to get your GUID back, well it just so happens I got to keep that and it only seems to change every 3 reinstalls (yay >.>) I’m willing to follow detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to get my old GUID back so I may do so whenever I mess something up xD

also I was wondering if anyone knew of a site to get a GUID incase I run in to any trouble with remaking my GUID, I have tried http://trem.tjw.org/backport and http://trem-servers.com/index.php?page=downloads but they don't work and never have for me, I use to get my GUID from my old clan's site but they moved to a diffrent site and no longer have that option.

Thank you for the help :)

P.S. sorry for any confusion, I typed this at 5am so it might be alittle sloppy since I am/was tired and abit grumpy xD

I am running windows 7 and love it

See if you have a "qkey" file in \Program Files\Tremulous or it's subfolder \base\, and also check for it in \Application data\Tremulous or somewhere there. If you have the file, you can get your GUID back (back up that file!). For the qkey to be used, you need a client like Tremfusion or MG client.

Hmm, I think you may be refering to a tremulous client that supports the guid since the 1.1 client doesn't.  You can get a client that supports a guid here.  The qkey is your guid, save it.  When you locate it, email it to yourself and then it will always be there ;)

Also, if you are playing the trem game play preview (gpp in the files section) that version supports guids so you should be good there.

As far as step by step how to replace/save your configs, well on windows I'm really not sure where all of that is kept.  Somewhere in documents and settings/YOURUSERNAME/...  If you search there for qkey (after having started one of the new clients at least once) you should find the folder that qkey is it which is where your tremulous client configs are since the client creates it if its not there.  When you get everything set the way you want, zip that folder up, including a note on where it is.  It may be big cause it'll include any maps you've downloaded from servers, but it'll be a good backup of your trem settings.

One other thing to keep in mind (which you may already know), if a server changes its IP, you're guid will not be recognizable on to that server, so someone on that server will need to setlevel you again. :)

Only if he set /cl_guidServerUniq 1, which almost noone does. Except 1.2 client which does that by default.

most decent servers will remove your admin for cl_guidserveruniq 0

would it be possible to get that to default to 1(if it isnt already).
there has been many guids stolen in the past from a random server that has been used ot harvest guid's etc
for server admins it should be a must to have it set to 1 even normal players should since some griefer could use your guid that they harvested and cause havoc on your fav server and get you banned

AFAIK gpp and svn both have it set to 1, (or maybe even removed, imo it should be) and the mg client has it on too.  Not sure about other 1.1 clients.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.
