Armory
« on: April 22, 2010, 10:57:44 pm »
I'll bet you thought I'd be the last to say it, but -
I think the Armory :armoury: needs to get a few more HP. During SD, it is the target of concentrated attacks, a true Achilles heel that the aliens have no equivalent of (aliens don't have a single structure with the importance of the armory.) Giving it say, 50-100 more hp would help balance SD, IMO
As such, I think it should take just a little longer to build, but yeah, there you go.

What say?

so the booster that can heal an alien with super low health back to 100% in almost 2 to 4 seconds isn't an important structure? It"s true that some go for the arm but I like to go for the nodes first. But when you compare it to what the humans usually attack 1st, the OM, the arm takes less time to rebuild.

Where's the logic in this, did he TK you with his words?

I'd say the alien eggs are of far more use than the human armory, but I digress. The key to keeping an armory alive isnt letting it take damage and constantly repairing it, but rather making sure its one of the least vulnerable buildings in your base, along with the telenodes and rc. If its placed badly it doesnt matter whether it has 280 health or 1280, eventually, it'll asplode.

[sigh] No the booster is not equivalent to the armory, because a booster can (and does) get replaced by Basilisks in SD. There is no comparison. And no, humans do not always go for the OM first, usually it's the eggs. Please, play more before saying stuff like this.

Nah, there is a big difference between 280 and 1280. The difference is reaction time, or the time it takes a human to notice the  :armoury: needs help and switch to repairing it. Eventually it will explode, but not as soon, and that's the difference. SD is where the true balance of tremulous comes into focus, and I think the bloated alien win ratio is largely because of this human vulnerability. I'm not talking about giving it a huge bonus, but just a minor boost. It is (as it is now) still really easy to take down even by one alien.

I think I agree that another increase wouldn't hurt. Outside of SD, killing the armory doesn't do that much good for the aliens. In SD, I think extra hp would be nice. I'm not sure though, considering the balance seems fairly good as it is.

But my point was about placement. An armory with 280hp that is covered in some way shape or form from all approaches will last far longer than one with an inherent flaw in its location, despite having 400% more health. Throw a dedi builder/healer into the mix and the winner is even more obvious. I don't see it as a balance issue, so long as it is able to be placed in such a way that is is easily cover-able if the humans wish to do so.

Armouries have 420 health now, sudden death accounts for only 10% of games, and the win ratio is currently a very acceptable 7:6. And I've never done any balancing with sudden death in mind because it was always meant to be nothing more than a more satisfying way to end stalemates than abruptly stopping everything.

I always try to have a spare arm on a repeater at SD - it doesn't necessarily last that long, but it definitely takes the pressure off the main base during the initial rush.

If your arm dies constantly in SD games it means that it's placement sucks.

And aliens do have building "comparable" with arm - OM. It does have more hp than arm, but it's bigger, and it's easier for humans to kill om than for aliens to kill arm because they can use ranged weapons.

I'm wondering what happened to "new" armory menu which eliminated "how do I buy new weapon" issue. Why it's gone?
