Steam will supports OSX and Linux
« on: May 04, 2010, 05:42:21 am »
I remember 2 years ago back when I played Tremulous coming to this forum and hearing about this software called 'Steam' that some one wanted to use to distribute Tremulous ( http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8184.60 ). He pretty much got flamed with comments stating it only supported Windows, it was really buggy, and No benefits. I didn't know what the discussion was about because I didn't know what steam was, but after 2 years I have fully switched and rarely get any PC titles that aren't distributed by steam.

With a future update they are supporting OSX and Linux, its not buggy like it supposedly used to be, and there is many benefits like voice chat, statistics and easy patching to all people with tremulous.

I realize I will probably be flamed for this, but wouldn't moving to steam be a good idea for Darklegion Development? I thought I would just come back to these forums incase you guys don't realize steam will soon support linux.

its been rumored for ages that steam is going to support other OS's

there is no official word on support http://supportwiki.steampowered.com/wiki/Steam_for_Linux but...

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=steam_confirmation&num=1
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=steam_linux_script&num=1
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODE3Mw
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23326#post123496
...and about 10000 more newsitems and posts over the years

also someone found some linux files(alot missing and have since been taken down) its been rumored for months till they actually release a client its just rumors. anyway steam is only a distribution platform(doing god knows what else id hate to think about it) it would only be used as an easy way to install/distribute to people who prefer steam over installing it themselves.

remember though UT3 was meant to have binaries downloadable like a day after it was released in 2007 and we are still waiting for them in 2010 im lucky i didn't preorder it and thats with a company saying that they are going to support linux(atleast we got to see a screenshot of it running in linux and a newspost saying that they got a few more bugs to fix but that was like months ago......).

It would be a horrible idea to "move to" steam.
First of it would add absolutely nothing except a dependency to steam.
Voice chat? Got it already, and if you don't like it you can use mumble.
Statistics? http://stats.tremulous.net/tremstats/eu1/ + <insert url which i cant remembe>
Updating also works seamlessly already with your operating systems package manager of choice.

does he mean use the source engine like the other threads and not a an alternative distribution platform ewwwwwwwwwwwww
i dont want to be locked into using steam if it ever got a linux version and using its engine will do just that. adding tremulous to their games list as an alternative way to get it fine..... but changing to source engine no way!!!

Steam and the source engine are different things.
AFAIK he's not advocating switching to source.
AFAIK steam have voip in it's "friends" thingy, thus in some games you can chat to friends who are playing different games etc.

If the Source engine is be ported to Linux, I'll love it (it's a good engine, I have played HL2 on my Geforce4MX without any problem).

But to me the important event of this year will be the release of idTech4 to open source. If it has the same success as idTech3 (in which is based Tremulous), I'm sure we linux user will have a lot of free quality games to enjoy :D

It's great that something that's only currently available for windows and mac will possible be available for linux too.
Don't forget that steam is just a content distribution system though.
Just because they will possibly port steam (and i say possibly because they haven't made an official announcement (no phoronix doesn't count (yes, nested parentheses are not actually proper English))) doesn't mean they will also port their games.
True, it's not unlikely - but i wouldn't get excited until it's actually released.

I know this is a little off-topic but

+1 It goes to show that Linux is now starting to be treated seriously. Something that started out as someone's university tool is becoming a household name. I don't know how many people I've spoken to have said "Oh yeah I've heard about linux"

As far as trem goes, I couldn't care one way or the other if it's gets onto steam. If what I hear is true though it probably won't make it. I expect that steam is after $$$$$$$, which it can't get from FOSS. What it does mean though is that they think Linux has a big enough market share to start distributing software for Linux... and that's GOOD!
