invisi-mouse
« on: May 11, 2010, 06:13:44 pm »
Hey, just started trying to play Tremulous this morning, and noticed that:

1) when I tried to join a server that I didn't have a map for, the mouse would go invisible.

2) When exiting the game, the credits screen would show up, and the game would then freeze.

I've already used the 'Search' feature. I found one for the mouse that looked like it exactly matched my issue, but seriously, it opened a blank page each time. And freezing on the credits screen? Didn't find anything on that.

Ubuntu 9.10, freshly installed a couple days ago. One laptop, one desktop. Integrated graphics on both. I'm at work right now, can't provide any other information other than that until later. If anyone knows what's up or can post a link right away I'd appreciate it. Otherwise let me know if there's an output that I could provide that would help. Thanks a TON.

Have you updated your graphics drivers? I noticed that you only installed Ubuntu a few days ago, and this is something that doesn't get done for you. Under the system tab, go to administration, then to harware drivers. This is the best that Ubuntu can do for you, otherwise you'll have to hunt for them manually.
   Welcome to Tremulous.

I also tested the game on Ubuntu some weeks ago and it's true it freezes when quitting. Needs a restart to fix it.

Conzul you are a genius. I didn't even think about that because of the integrated graphics, I figured I just would use the regular drivers that are installed and that was my only option. I installed the ATI proprietary drivers (the package was "xorg-driver-fglrx" and it installed everything else I needed with it) and now it doesn't crash when I try and exit. But the mouse still goes invisible. Which I suppose I could live with, but do you (or anyone else out there) have any suggestions for that?

EDIT: Just kidding, I guess I lied. After I didn't have a map, my mouse disappeared AND I couldn't get out of the credits screen. I do have a couple graphics cards laying around I could try and swap them in and out... maybe that would work?

Well I used to use Ubuntu, and the credits screen would often freeze on me. I learned that if I clicked very quickly as it came up that it wouldn't freeze on me, but this is a silly solution. If you have an nVidia card, try that, there is better linux support for those types. Once you have it in, try for the nVidia Accelerated Graphics driver v 185. It should show in the list. They may have more recent ones, idk.
Where did you get the tremulous installer? There are a few revisions floating around, some better than others (idk much about this at all).
Also Ubuntu tends to have problems with the cursor dissappearing in general. You might be able to fix this by finding your xorg.conf file (u must be root) and add the line "Option HWCursor Off" But they might have fixed this in Ubuntu 9.10

as a workaround for the mouse issue, open the console (press ~) and type
Code: [Select]
\ui_loading 0or grab gpp (this issue was fixed ages ago, but it needs a new release)

I think that mouse thing only happens with TJWs client. I could be wrong but I had that happen, but when I switched to fusion, hasn't happened at all. Don't think it happens with the mg client but I could be wrong.
