Voting of maps outside rotation
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:47:47 pm »
There have been problems with map votes lately. People love to vote for maps that aren't in rotation and while that in itself isn't bad the problem is that most of those maps are horrible. It may be boring at times to play the same maps but at least they play reasonably well and that is far more important than playing something new. The solution is either to remove the bad maps or limit the amount how often they can be voted. I'll go through some of them that are in my opinion the worst.

Slimepunk is ruined by the doors that are activated by pressing button. It's aggravating enough to use them normally when you have to keep pressing the buttons all the time to move through them. That is minor to the real problem, however. The real problem is that doors can be jammed by someone pressing the button from the other side when you try to open the door. This leads to people getting stuck on the doors and it's especially bad when humans can build a base that is only accessible by using a door.

Procyon is enormous and there are never enough players to stop aliens from egg spamming. If the aliens egg spam humans can just admit defeat.

Pulse has bad gameplay and glitches that break the map.

I really hope something is done about this because this makes me not want to play the game anymore.

In my opinion, poor maps should be removed from the official servers.  It's great to try new maps, and see if they work or not.  However if they have poor gameplay, they should be removed.

Yes, there should definitely be some quality control.
If people want to play slimepunk or other buggy maps they can always go to Unlimited BP.

I completely disagree, because I like more variety than most people, and because map quality is subjective. For example, I happen to quite like Slimepunk, Procyon and Pulse, despite the reasons you gave (though I disagree that Procyon is easy to eggspam on). Is there a better way to decide the quality of a map without counting up everybody's opinions? I say no. This is what the current system does: a map vote will only pass if the majority of the players vote for it, whether or not it's "horrible". What I'm saying is, who are you to say which maps should be removed?

I agree that slimepunk doors could be much better (easier to reach button, a bit faster, +invisible brushes so people can't get stuck on them, and delay for buttons), but they are certainly not map breaking. Maybe you should learn the vent system, as pretty much every area is accessible from there for up to mara (+mara if u evolve before coming out, as it doesn't fit back in easily enough to be worth trying).

Procyon IS NOT enormous. Eggspam was never a problem even in 1.1 on a high bp server, with no bp queue. It can't possibly be now. Again, go learn the map.

Pulse does have 1 place where you could get outside the map that can be fixed like the tremor one, but another that can't... I agree with bad gameplay, tho only if human team sux at start, as better alien team can easily stop them from building RC.

Yes, people have different opinions but i doubt most people are able to enjoy a map when being stuck on doors, people egg spamming or glitch building.

You are right that most voted yes and why they do that i have wondered a long time. Why people vote yes when there is a vote kick when they don't even know why the vote was started? Why people vote yes to admit defeat votes at the start of the map 5 times in a row? Why people vote yes to all votes no matter what?
The answer is that people don't think at all when voting and for that reason their votes shouldn't count. At least I'm thinking so my opinion matters way more than them just mindlessly pressing F1.

Perhaps there are ways to attack even if the doors are jammed but does it mean the gameplay isn't broken? If higher classes than adv. mara can't attack properly it's not good at all.

It's puzzling that someone could think like that after playing Procyon. Have you ever played the map?

I always find it funny when people say "everyone always votes yes" when the facts say the exact opposite: http://stats.tremulous.net/tremstats/us1/votes.php
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Interesting but it's opposite to the experience i have had in game. I admit i usually don't see all of the votes because i concentrate on playing so big part of the effect may be because of repeat votes.

I also seem to witness more mindless yes votes than anything else.  Do those stats include canceled votes?

Pulse has a horrible gameplay. Procyon is too big with too wide corridors. Slimepunk is a beautiful and interesting map ruined by the gameplay-wise stupid doors and the horrible vent.

Custom maps are OK to play every 4th or so map, but it's a problem that there are times when some people think every map must be voted. The rotation is there for a reason, why can't we enjoy it too?

To be fair the rotation is really dull.
It contains the same maps we've played for 4 years + nano when there are excellent new maps.
Perhaps the happy voting would go away if the rotation improved.

Feel free to post topics proposing maps be added to the rotation. That deserves higher scrutiny than vote-able maps.

I happen to quite like Slimepunk, Procyon and Pulse.
That's only because you set it upon yourself to love any map I dislike, you wanker.

Many of the maps that we've played for 4 years were giving a headache in 1.1. Now, in the new version, their gameplay is great and different such as nexus6 or karith. Though I agree there could be other maps in too.
