« on: May 20, 2010, 10:40:53 am »
I have ubuntu 9.10 running trem flawlessly.
but when I used a MVGA-NVTNT 2MA/nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)
32mb graphics card my fps is now 1

1. how do I fix this

2. is there a driver for it?

3. any more advice?

Well, you need a very old driver (nvidia-glx-71) for this card, which seems to be no longer supported since jaunty.
You could try to get the driver directly from NVidia.

Or you could upgrade to a modern card for about $30

thanks i think i can find the driver.

but also the 1fps happens on the windows version and the native version

(when i use wine its the same story).

but when I use normal programs (native and wine) it's faster than usual (when I did not have the agp graphics card)

hope this helps ^_^

EDIT: I found the driver but theres no way to install it does anyone know the code for the repository apt?

Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

If we pay you, will you please stop running trem in wine? That's just weird. Try not to let on to too many ppl that you do that.

I don't know what it is called exactly (because I use fedora), but if you go to System -> Preferences -> Hardware Drivers (or whatever it's called) you can download and installed the latest drivers there. some people said the driver isn't supported but if you haven't already tried you should check there. Also, don't use tremulous on wine ><

Quick tremulous install command-
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install tremulous
Other stuff like tremfusion will have to be installed manually which is as easy as putting the correct files, folders, and pk3s in the correct locations. There is a guide to install it on the tremfusion site.

NO NO NO! Use the official installers...
I think the reason you are getting 1fps just might be cuz you are using an ancient gfx card...

yeah I know but still there is a driver for it that I can't get the source for (ppa: or something <source here>)
and the driver is glx-71 which doesn't exist in 9.10 only 9.04 and below (which if updated is not there anymore) :( I just need the source for the nvidia driver and the package to install it thnx

Unfortunately Ubuntu doesn't support the old drivers, they recommend to switch to the free Nouveau drivers for your card, but the shipped Nouveau drivers support only 2D  :-\

You could try the experimental 3D-enabled Nouveau drivers from the xorg-edgers ppa, but this is _experimental_ software.

Also the TNT2 is very old, I expect it to do no more than 10-20 fps anyway. Have you considered upgrading to a new(er) graphics card (you don't need to buy a 5970, every low-end GPU is much much faster than the ancient TNT2).

Tremulous is old too :)

I used to have a TNT2 and it worked OK.

Install the drivers (the instructions are pretty clear) and it should work.

also to see if 3d is working use this command
Code: [Select]
glxinfo | grep -i "Direct Rendering"
if it says direct rendering: yes then your card now has 3d capabilities working(i notice that it doesn't say it no more with glxinfo for newer NVIDIA drivers you can find the info in the nvidia control panel thing too)

but jeez upgrade your gfx card seriously something like a 8600 can now be gotten for like less then 20 bucks but then since your using such a old card your prob still using agp(or maybe even GASP pci) and would prob have to upgrade your mainboard and then your ram and cpu too

Geez when you told me about this problem you didnt tell me the thing only has 32mb on it. Why not just get a new one? I bought the one I use nVidia 6200 512mb (agp 8x not pci-e :/ ) for like 40 bucks..
I would assume that the 32mb is large portion, if not the whole problem
