TL;DR: I am right. And if you oppose me, you're wrong.
[...]I don't think your doing anyone a favor. Your just editing another map that was pretty much fine as it is and renaming it so people know it was made by you instead of just putting your name in the levelshot like every other mapper.
[...]I don't think you need to edit others maps, specially when maps you actually make are always better than the ones you edit.[...]I'd like to note that instead of just makeing a b8_gmotwmod1290371 or what ever, Why not a Mission_Two_B1?
I personally think that all the things your doing to the map is making too easy, instead of being a challenge.
Another problem I have with your lighting stuff is that they look like floating orbs of light instead of looking like lights coming from light, etc.
Thanks, Please don't ruin this map.
OMFG, I have no idea what devil rides you people, but this is like Matt Dillahunty having to reply to a 1 minute rant of a creationist (one of the reasons he stops people immediately, sometimes too fast for my taste). There is so much stuff in there, I don't know where to start.
First of all: Nearly
exactly the same things you say here have been said to be my Drazilox about a month or two ago. He said that after my treecannon_b4 mod had already been proven to be ace, which kinda makes his statement implode. Additionally: Guess which maps are most played on his server
by far. I believe he regrets having said that, otherwise his having the maps on his server would reveal hypocrisy.
Ironically, Drazilox said in this very thread that he was working on a MissionOne modification himself - and you tell
me (not him - why did you pick me?) not to mod other people's maps!
Have you seen how people like to play treecannon_b4_gmotwmod (and I don't ask if you like the map - I ask if you're aware that others enjoy it - then again, you already answered that question by saying "I don't think your doing anyone a favor.")? They are having
*F*U*N* with it!
Now,
your will is that this modification would never have come to existence. Which is: Your will is that the people enjoying the mod should not have that fun they are having. The purpose of Tremulous and of mapping is to create fun for the people! That you accuse me of just wanting to stamp my name on everything shows that you have not understood that at all.
Also... how retarded you think people are? "mission_one_b7_gmotwmod01? Oh, Gmotw must be the author of mission_one! What a great map mission_one is. Never saw it before. I want Gmotw's babies!" And then I go: "People love how I put my name on everything! I now feel so much more valuable, really, this is
true value that I gained by trying to deceive people into believing that I am the creator of those maps!"
But even though you want the people not to enjoy the mods (Which they do!), you still believe that I am the "guilty" one here, not you? Can you please do what your name implies and just be silent? Do you not see how what you say is... INSANE in the widest sense, wanting me not to create a fun time for people?
And I don't do it "like ever other mapper" because I believe that every mapper is doing it wrong. Now, of course this makes me wrong in your (and every idiot's opinion) because if you don't follow established opinion, you are of course wrong, as history has proven on many occasions. History shows that it is right to not seek a new, better way, but to follow established opinion. Right.
Every mapper should use a short version of their name at the beginning of their map names. This does have several advantages, one of which is name uniqueness, another one is that your maps will be a group in an alphabetical list, another one is that Radiant will create an extra category for your maps in the texture list instead of spreading them all around. You probably didn't know that because, yeah, you're doing it wrong.
Another thing: From my experiences, I realized that the alpha, beta, final approach is a fail. I switched to just giving my release a counter suffix (like "_001"). Some finals are still broken in places, but you cannot now or in two years, when you're kinda in the mood to change something, release a new one cause the Tremulous world associates that "final" means, you know, that nothing will change any more. So, you see many "beta" that are never touched again after years. Guess why. No, that's not what I do.
My methods have been proven to be good and right to me, and that everyone else does it differently does not mean that I do it wrong. To me, it means that everyone else is doing it wrong. And of course I will keep using the same naming methods. My personal computer history is nearly 30 years long. To be systematic is in my blood. And to believe in my judgment is, too.
Also, if I wanted to mod an existing map like mission_one, I would not call the modified version "mission_two", that would be asinine! Obviously, you have no idea how to give a map a meaningful name, so I hope that I won't be annoyed by any of your creations.
Oh, and I am editing a map that is "pretty much fine" as it is? What about people on [W]onderland complaining that mission_one is not on the server? Drazilox didn't put it there because on that freefunds-server, people are seduced to instantly evolve, which causes a truckload of griefing on that map. Basils just push the buttons and destroy the game for both teams, it's the perfect decon. That's something which could be easily improved, and I am already on it. But you think that this anti-griefer measure is making it "too easy"? Admittedly, a deconner can be considered to be a challenge, but that's not the way Tremulous is to be played.
Again, I am creating a considerable load of fun for the people, but you rather wish that I don't. Did you even think before writing your comment?
Oh, my name in the map's name? Even if it were about some ego thing (which it isn't, for I don't need people to have a feeling of self-worth, which you kids are even unable to consider possible, and you, silence, probably assumed that it is about ego because
you might have a low feeling of self-worth, which apparently would be justified): If my mods are muchly appreciated by some people, why not stamp my tag on it? "A modification by gmotw? Wanna see it. It usually means fun." But, as I said, it is mostly about being systematic. An experienced mapper knows how important it is to be very careful when naming the map and assets.
That you're accusing me of being a low work-stealer makes you, in turn, so damn low, silence, you have no idea. And only time will really show and prove to you how low. I won't say yet what exactly I mean by that, because the time is not right yet.
I wish the world were free of people like you, silence. People who believe that they have something to say, but whose opinions are just idiotic imploding garbage. Only on closer look one can see how incredibly wrong you are, silence. So, every time one of you devils utters their oh so meaningful crap, we have to fight another instance of self-contradictory bullshit which would otherwise effectively poison the nice coexistence that we could have without you.
Also, WHAT THE FUCK were you talking about when you were saying "Another problem I have with your lighting stuff is that they look like floating orbs of light instead of looking like lights coming from light, etc."? What are you referring to? Do you have any example? It was I who said that the point lights without fixtures in mission_one are not nice, and that I was about to change that. What is wrong with you? Is your mind upside down? I'd prefer it to never hear from you again, silence. To wade through your mind vomit causes me physical pain. And by that, I don't even mean the "your/you're" problem that you people love to celebrate. I mean, how fucking hard is it to get that right at some point. Maybe I should not of said that, huh.
There are people who say that I shouldn't mod other guy's maps. Those people should SHUT THE FUCK UP AND BE ASHAMED like never before in their lifes. And I know that it's written with a v. I'd like
mankind to change that to f because it makes more sense. "lives" (noun) can be confused with "lives" (verb, third person). Unnecessary. Singular: word. Plural: words. Why make it complicated? To prevent more people from learning one language that can unite us all? That would fit the profile of my enemies.
"The FCC, an appointed body, not elected, answerable only to the president, decided on its own that radio and television were the only two parts of American life not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Why did they do that? Because they got a letter from a minister in Mississippi. A Reverend Donald Wildman in Mississippi heard something on the Radio that he didn't like. Well, Reverend, did anyone ever tell you THERE ARE TWO KNOBS ON THE RADIO? Two knobs on the radio! Of course, I'm sure the Reverend isn't that comfortable with anything that has two knobs on it. But hey, Reverend, there are two knobs on the radio. ONE OF THEM TURNS THE RADIO OFF, AND THE OTHER ONE CHANGES THE STATION! Imagine that, Reverend, you can actually change the station!
IT'S CALLED FREEDOM OF CHOICE, and it's one of the principles this country was founded upon! Look it up in the library, Reverend, if you have any of them left when you're finished burning all the books."
-George Carlin
Do you see now who you really are, silence? So, people like you want the mods not to exist? Why? Because rock music is evil?
The Trem 1.1.0 maps are OLD. The game was published when, FOUR years ago? People have played them a thousand times. To make them into new experiences, server admins make new layouts for them, and there are server-side modifications (buildpoints, slash range, new buildings, new equipment, etc.), and no doubt there are people saying that there shouldn't be changes to standard Trem yaddayadda.
My first (and so far only (if you don't count the proof-of-concept test "pianolessons)) map "gmotw_skybox" (
http://tremulous.net/wiki/Gmotw_Skybox) brought something new to the table and has a long future of colorful matches (and probably adjustments :/) ahead. My other projects will undoubtedly also bring something new. There's for example "gmotw_whiteout". This is a map without textures. There are not even colors. It's all just white. Sounds like shit? Wait and see.
The modding started with treecannon_b4. I thought WTF, reactor doesn't fit upstairs? And once humans have fully retreated up there, the game is essentially over. And it will end in a boring always similar way. And WTF is with that lift sound error? And then, after many matches, it hit me: Just mod the goddamn map! Bang. Instant hit. More modifications of that map... even more well accepted. Gmotwmod06 of that map is being played like crazy!
I tried ATCS, scaled in different ways. One has become "gmotw_atcsraped". This map is also well accepted. I didn't call it "gmotw_..." to steal anything. No, it was, again, just a systematic decision: It's not just a slightly changed/adjusted/optimized map, it's a totally changed experience. If you stand on the bunker and look at the top above a base's main entrance, you'll feel a much stranger, otherworldly emotion than in the original ATCS. The larger area and the new locations and rooms change the strategic situation completely. Oh, and
LOCATION NAMES, like all my other modifications and maps! By the way, I gave everyone proper credit in the load screen, same in the treecannon mod. And I included the .map file, of course, so the next guy who wants to mod it doesn't have to go through the painful decompilation and structural/detail adjustment process.
Then I saw Niveus on [W]onderland and how pathetically fucked humans were with aliens coming in from front and back (human default is in crack-floor room). "Escape hatch", it said in my head. Just like treecannon. Well, the idea would have worked if I hadn't additionally put the human base in the basement-of-death. In the next releases, that's gonna be fixed. If the prohibition-NAZIs don't get to me first, that is.
So, there are people who don't want me to touch the holy original maps (or the maps of anyone else, for that matter). FUCK THEM WITH A GLOWING RED IRON BAR! I don't have to pull the "God does what he wants, and if you oppose it, you're an enemy of the coexistence" card to show how wrong these idiots are.
(1) There are people who enjoy to see these old maps in new light. The corridor that you're so used to that you can't see it any more, you're just running over the map inside your head while your eyes are filtering for the presence of people and buildings - it is suddenly changed! The death-trap corridor base - suddenly, there's an escape door that leads directly to the main staircase, yay for freedom, no more camp-death! It motivates to move your damn ass out of the base. What about that stupid fake door outside in the Karith map that you can so elaborately climb up to and make a base in front - but it doesn't open? Yes, I have already begun with that map (Man, does it have many decorations. The .map file is 20 mb!), and nothing any of the sceptic-maggots say or do can stop me.
I do respect the makers of these maps, but even if they would make the website "godstopmoddingourmaps.com" with everyone of the original awesome Trem team subscribing and writing articles about how much I suck, that would not stop me! I love to do it the friendly handshaky way. But if there is someone standing in the way between the people and a considerable amount of new fun, I have all the right to ignore the complaints of skeptics or map makers. We are not talking about stealing credit, preventing income (music-download), we are just talking about creativity and fun. Whatever else some idiots tend to interpret into it and then accuse me of (Accusing me of their fantasy, no?) is an entirely different subject - and even if it were true: How important would that be in comparison to the enrichment of the Tremulous world?
(2) I am not a renegade. Everyone who opposes me is. Whoever says that I shouldn't mod other people's maps is in a 180° contradiction to the people who enjoy playing them. Now, who's right? CHANGE THE STATION, YOU IDIOT! If you don't like the music, then don't tell me not to make it. DO NOT LISTEN TO IT! How fucking retarded can people still be in 2010?
