A couple simple questions
« on: July 23, 2006, 08:17:17 pm »
- Can a map set things like player EP/creds?
- Is there a fairly robust (and easy enough to use) trigger system in gtkradiant? The "tutorial mission" would require things like building spawning, team changing, opening and closing doors when objectives are completed, giving the player EP/creds, etc.

I'm thinking of making a single-player tutorial map, for newbies to understand how the game works, and possibly a testing range map, with targets on the wall and unlimited creds and enemy buildings, without using cheats. However, I need those above questions answered before I can decide if I'm going to try it. Any help is appreciated ^^

- No

- It's robust and easy to use, sure,, but it is not comprehensive enough to do want you would want in a complete tutorial. No giving cash or items or forcing class, no advancing to stage 2 and 3.

As I mentioned in your other thread in general, a better option would be to record a tutorial demo with several players all following a script, a dedicated camera guy spectating and recording, a person named 'tutorial' spitting out pre-written lines of text with some binds.

You could do a whole series of them, from a basic introduction to weapons, buildings and classes, through to how to pull off a successful base move. I'm sure a lot of people here would want to help out if you did something like that.

I'd watch it and help out, but this would take a lot of coordination and planning.. and in the end you have video files... which are not small, you increase the download size and eat bandwidth.. which isnot cheap.

Yeah, if it had to come down to video, it just wouldn't be worth including it in the game download. And then, if it's not in the download, there's really no point, since people can just read guides on the forums.

Not to mention the coordination it would take to get a bunch of dependable people to record guides like that.

Well, I guess it's too bad the trigger system isn't versatile enough... Something like this would be possible in the Unreal engine, which is pretty much what made me think of it in the first place.

The only alternative I could think of would be a "slideshow" tutorial, with lots of screenshots, but then you lose all the interactivity and it just becomes the game manual + pictures.
