You can size pipes quite easily like u size a block, but a better way of editing patches is selecting them and then pressing V. Then you'll see the vertexes, which you can move. You can also make curves by using them. If you need more vertexes (like for longer pipes with lots of curves) you can add some by using the 'curve/insert/add two rows' command.

You could probably just do rails with brushes and clipping quite easily couldn't you? They're pretty small so no need to go that high poly.

I know how to make pipes and size them down. But like in some other maps people have these really small basic rails that I really need. So is that the only way too make them, just by sizing the cylinders down too were its a rail...

You could use models but some might think that a bit too excessive.

If you are talking about handrails, then those are easy to make out of brushes, 2-4 gu high/wide works well IMO, with the top about 32gu off ground, and another horizontal piece at about half way down. Something like:
Code: [Select]
__,______
__|______

From what you say (not only here, also in another topic), it looks like you didn't change the gridsize. Just press 1-9 for diffrent sizes, so you can mke diffrent sized brushes. 4 is default (Each square has 8 quakeunits). 1 to 3 are good for small details while settings >4 can be used for walls, etc.
