ATCS front rets - 1.2
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:39:28 am »
Hey I'm wondering if someone can help me with this. I've been trying all possible approaches, but I can only get through with 9hp as a dretch, assaulting from the front. Is there any way to get past them without losing all but 9hp?

Could you inform me what pathway you're taking to get past them?  I haven't played gpp in at least 2 months so I'm a little iffy on the subject, I would assume because of the slower lock on speed the ceiling method is by far the best approach.  In 1.1 you can get past with almost full hp using that method.  You come from the ceiling angled towards the left side, you hit that corner that goes up straight to the higher ceiling and you're taken almost instantly out of ret range and can drop down into the human base with ease.  This allows you to be in ret range for a very minimal amount of time compared to any other approach, you can also use it up the right side to get a backwards advantage on the side ret allowing you to maneuver around it with ease.

I haven't tested this personally but I'd imagine it'd be even more effective with the 1.2 rets because of their slower rate of lock on.  It takes practice to get the right entrance so be patient.  If you go even a little bit in the wrong direction it could add incredible damage from the rets even if it only slows you down a few milseconds because once those rets lock on it's a shit storm.  This means that you can cut the overall time of travel out of your objective because you only need to focus on that amount of time from start of ret lock on to out of ret range.  It's a bad idea to do this if the humans have built rets up in their base or the hall ret isn't down and humans are near it.  The hall ret will always grant you easier access but obviously you want to go front for flanking reasons.  Good luck and let me know how it works for you.  I'll have to download gpp again one of these days and try it out myself.

It's just for getting from the outside, past them back toward the ramps. I've tried *many* ways and they always deal 16dmg to me as I pass. This goes for full frontal, and wallskipping on the side of them.

Alright after downloading and trying it out, going from the ceiling is complete suicide. The best I could get was if you strafe jump at an angle you can get past with 17 hp which is a huge improvement over 9.

My own attemps took about 3-4 minutes in devmap before I achieved zero hits, whereupon I restarted and did a perfect, no-hit run. It involves wallwalking up to the second marking from the top, then running and entering the turret range before jumping into the middle of them (or onto one of them it seems) and getting past to the ramps. Good for attempting to go for those easy early node kills, but very noisy so I don't recommend my approach if you're looking to flank the hall unless the human base is empty.

I recommend doing some devmap practice before trying it in a proper game, if only to get yourself used to the motions and to perfect your timings.

Edit: works on either side of the entrance

Ehm, I would say to ignore the previous demos in this thread. You just have to start from a good position and you can strafejump really easy without getting a scratch on your dretch. There is no problem at all.

Yeah, ignore the previous demos, go learn strafejumping and soon you'll be able to get past those rets (and lots of other things) with ease every single time (unless you mess it up). Don't even need a good starting position.
For learning strafejumping I recommend the map straftrain1. You just need to jump continuously (pressing and holding jump before landing the previous jump, then releasing and repressing after each jump), hold fwd+left and look about 35 degrees left, then suddenly switch left/right at start of each jump, so on 2nd, 4th etc jumps you hold fwd+right and look ~35 degrees right. The optimal angle approaches 45 degrees as speed increases.
You'll also want to use Options->HUD->Show Speed: "Text + Graph No-Z" so you can see if/how fast your speed is actually increasing.

If that takes too long for you, you could just wallwalk only at the very start past the corner into ret range, then drop on the ground and run past the side of the rets. It takes longer and is easy to get stuck, but may be easier if you can't strafejump.
