On fighting with humans
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:31:35 pm »
I want to improve my skills as a human. I tried to spectate some expert humans to pick up some tricks. But I don't see what is the trick. Everything dies around them even if I'm sure their crosshair weren't on their target. and they survive almost everthing. I often see weird situations when a goon or a mara jumping around that human player and seemingly ignore him, why? I think there also a lot a of things I overlooked and I need advice.

Things die wierdly becase they're probably playing unlagged. Given their ping and the player's movement, from their perspective, the crosshair was over the alien when they shot, even if that's not true for you or indeed the server. That's my understanding of what unlagged is, and makes things more playable on higher pings.

I'm no pro human by any means, but the thing which has single handedly done more for my game than anything else is learning to use dodge effectively. Its unbelievably useful for keeping distance between you and your enemy, and for avoiding pounces/tramples/mara flying headbites. Keeping a bit of stamina available is pretty much essential because of this. Circle/strafe jumping as a human (as per Q3, urban terror, etc) is actually pretty useful for a very quick burst of speed in emergency situations too, even if it uses a ton of stamina.

But yeah, I spec good humans (and aliens) and think "That looks simple now! I really should be able to do that..." then miserably fail to recreate what I've just seen being executed flawlessly.

No, dev's want lagged, something that is older than unlagged, and out-dated.

About unlagged
The graphs on the EU and US graphs look oddly different, but this may be because of the smaller number of games in the upper playercounts skewing the trendlines. However, I think the outcome is close enough to justify not having made balance changes specific to unlagged settings. To be certain about this, the best thing to do would be to swap the unlagged settings on the two servers without making any other changes, but considering that both are unbalanced in the same way anyway I think this would be a waste of time. We're going to turn unlagged on for both servers

All the way back from the beginning of GPP Phase 2, to this very day. Of course, you have the option to turn Unlagged off for yourself only with cg_unlagged.
