Thoughts on the game
« on: July 27, 2006, 05:07:32 pm »
This is fun. I got this game about a week ago and play it every day now. Here are my thoughs on the game, i'll try to keep it short and to the point.

-The interface could be a lot more graphically driven. It would be easier seeing an icon representing each item than reading a list for the item you want, especially when the list changes depending on what you already have. The same goes for choosing races, and other menu stuff. If I can help design some stuff please let me know where to go or who to consult about it.

-There could be a separate spot for chat text, or it could stay in place longer than the other stuff. Usually there is so much going on that I don't have time to read the shortest of sentences before it gets pushed off the screen by various "killed by" messages. Bringing up the console just leaves you vulnerable to attack.

-Marauders move a little too fast I think. They often get into a human base and bounce around for a long time before being shot down by humans, or even turrets.

-The jetpack noise is insanely annoying considering you have to listen to it for all of stage 2 and usually 3. Maybe a deeper and less loud(relatively speaking) noise would be goood.

-Humans nearly always "camp." Now I think this is a perfectly valid strategy. Both races have different ways of playing. Humans are more tied to the base than aliens. I think it would be nice though if something were done to encourage more human offensive attacks.

-Games seem to swing a lot when they should stay balanced throughout. It starts with aliens rushing the humans and getting picked off. Humans usually are the first to stage 2, and 3. At this time they sometimes kill off the aliens, but usually lack the teamwork and coordination to go offensive. So they continue to camp at s3. Eventually the aliens work up enough evolve points to get several tyrants at which point an even slightly coordinated rush into the human base will end the game.

-Maybe there should be a limit on starting votes. There was one incident where the game was at a stalemate and one guy on the other team decided to start trying to get our top players kicked. He started about 6 votes one after the other eventually succeeding. At that point I tried to get
him kicked, which failed. Next thing I know hes running vote after vote trying to get me kicked.
Each player should only be able to start 1 vote every 3 minutes or so.

Of course most of what i'm saying are generalizations. A lot depends on the each team's skill and the map. This is just what I have observed in the large majority of games I have played so far.

I object to all toning down of the marauder!... I agree.. its a huge pain to kill.. I can wipe out a tyrant/goon/dretch/basilisk 1 on 1 but by the time i get the marauder down it hops off and i'm to slow to catch it.
But I love to play the marauder as it is.. i think it being slower would suck for getting into the base and making a distraction, which is something only the marauder can really do.

Everyone seems to have a problem with this.. the marauder is something you can use against them to break up the camping a bit... ironically..
No matter how hard the humans camp.. people will come out of the base.. they always do.. I do... its nice to know all the aliens think the humans are in the base and you slip out back, go to their base unnaposed and drop a grenade in the door... alternately.. I look for these people when i'm a weaker alien.. good kills!

Yeah... pretty much.. I enjoy the swing myself though.. keeps you on your toes, and there is nothing like pulling your team out of the crapper and attacking back!!.. but yeah.. tyrants will come along and eat your camping team and its all over..

... :/... yeah
Need good admins as well.. to stop this kind of childishness.

Well... these things always seem like a bigger problem in the start than they do later on.. its a matter of getting used to it..
Its all about the players trying to find ways to fix things they find wrong with the game by adjusting and exploiting them themselves. Once you take away your enemies tools by getting good at fighting them, the enemy will be weak again.. the marauder will just keep jumping, and if you can predict where it will run away to.. you can block it and they will be hopeless because often they think they can keep at it until their life is really low because they expect they can escape on a moments notice.

OBJECTION

(please click me)

To be fair though, most of your points are ok (i.e. the ones not about game mechanics). Tbh though, they are just part of the game. The vote kicking thing is an issue, but its not one unique to tremulous...
Official Ace Forum Attorney. If your post is stupid I will object...

The OBJECTION isn't really necessary, he's just listing stuff everyone notices, though the mara thing hasn't been brought up in a while.

The OBJECTION was kind of awesome, actually.

It's all true although already mentioned..
Good post though, much better then 7/10 other newbies. :D

And i would hate it if they'd nerf the Marauder, he is indeed a bit hard to kill yes, but they don't kill equally good humans as fast either.. (Light armor + pulse + helmet equals Adv./Marauder ? )

It was neat the first time i clicked it.. but its neatness is wearing off... expecially when i have to wait for it to load on a slow connection that i'm on sometimes just to read something you could have figured someone would say anyway.

Marauders are fine.  Really.  How much time have you spent playing as one?

Comments have been made on the interface.  I'm sure we'll see something better eventually.  Till then, you can set up a pretty sweet system of keybinds.

I agree on voting.

It seems to me that battle that swing back and forth are more interesting.

The jetpack volume could stand to be turned down a little.
