I thought current version number was 0.99 :P
What is with version numbering? you can call the next version trem 10 (like M$ does with its mediaplayer, directx ...)
most of the softwares doesnt use the proper version numbering.

Doom3 engine adds something for singleplayer games, but substract for multiplayer games and push the use of shadows for gameplay, that is gimmycky. Quake3 is much better engine for multiplayer. Its a overall better engine for users: run on older hardware smoothly.

I dont know much Quake4, I guest will fix some problems with Doom3, but stilll you get more on Quake3 and less fuss.

The delay of release of Quake3 engine as opensource whas because still some people buy Quake3 engine to Id Software. Q3 Its a very good and competitive open source engine. John Carmack sould be very proud of this one.

I think I will buy Quake4 soon, I am on Linux and Id Software always support my OS, so I support Id Software :D, I already have Doom3 and love it (but is uninstalled).

This generation better engine is Half-Life2, because even less advanced, feel more realistic. Push phisycs toys on gameplay, but is not gimmycky, and is fun (check Garris Mod). Valve dont support Linux much (theres no Linux native client) and dont seems to open old engines (half-life1). So I dont support Valve, and I will never buy more Valve games because as Linux user can't run his games.

LOL! It actually doesn't
Quake 1 had nothing to do with Stroggs, they had Death Squads that went through portals to destroy earth. Quake 2 and Quake 4 are related enough because Quake 2 takes place on Stroggos(Strogg home planet) and Quake 4 on earth(I bealieve) so Trem 1 and Trem 2 (if tehre was such a thing) would, in your mind, be a sequel... theoretically speaking I guess...

Almost... Quake4 takes place immediately after Quake2, on Stroggos as well. Your commander even mentions the destruction of the Macron by the Quake2 hero. In Quake4 you are part of the invasion force to take Stroggos after the way has been cleared in Quake2.

The upcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars takes place long before Q2/4 and plays during the initial Strogg invasion on Earth. ;)

QUAKE1

Quake 1 is about a dimensional creature that can warp space and time and already control some "dimensions". You can see this creature as a God, if you like it. His name is Quake, and his servant is Sub-nighurath.

The war start as humans are experimenting with teleporters (check 4 hours long film "Nehara" ), so open portals to other dimensions and try to send munition, crates, weapons, etc.. trough the doors.  Quake gets interested to "adquire" the dimension where humans live. So send a army to conquer that dimension. But a rogue soldier not only survive, but enter the dimensions Quake control, and kill one by one all Quake fortress (on futured themed dimensions, magic themed dimensions, medieval themed dimensions, etc).. the last one is a helllish dimensions where a huge psychic creature hide, the subnighurat. This creature is inmortal, but the rogue humans is smart enough to use the teleportating device to teleport into subnigurtah body. Because with all dimensions laws tho mass can't exist on the same location, the sub-nigurath is "telefragged", banned from this dimmension and his flesh fragged away all around. His control to the creatures (shamblers, fiends, but also human zombified, etc..) is broken,
and the humans prevail. The creatures the ranger fight are "H.P.L." based.

QUAKE2

Quake2 is about a war betwen a "borg" alike raze, the Stroogs, that use human body parts to created a machine-human hibrid army. Anyway a lonelly human soldier is able to break into Stroggs defense structures and kill his planetary chieff, the Makron.  The Quake2 history is more conventional, and theres no dimensions, helll alike creatures, zombies, etc.

QUAKE3

Quake3 is a unceremoniosly simple multiplayer game with a fight arena and weapons to fight. Theres even mapping features removed, rendering features removed, but the overall game is much PURE for multiplayer gamming. Its a total refinement of the multiplayer formula with ZERO tradeoff for singleplayer stuff.

QUAKE4

Quake4 continue the Quake2 history where is left with the Doom3 engine, gameplay and gimmicks.

Theres no continue history for Quake1, so no, Quake1 is unique, and all other games where less and less plot based and more simple brainless arcade.

I have buy Quake4 just yet this day!... hehehee. I will install it soon :D

Personally I'd like to know where this dumbass got the idea that they're making a Tremulous 2 for ANY engine....Tremulous as it stands isn't even patched yet....

Unless he thinks the patch is this Tremulous 2 he's babbling about which brings me back to my original post...it's a version nu,ber not a completely new game or port.

Id Software rules.  (Ok, so I'm an Id fanboi, whatever.)  Quake4 uses a tweaked version of the Doom3 engine.  By 'tweaked' I mean, basically the same engine.  In other words, Q4 is to Doom3 as Tremulous is to Q3A.  Essentially, just a total conversion of the engine, with maybe a few tweaks to pull some stuff off that wasn't in the original engine.

I would think that Carmack is proud of Q3.  It's a great engine.

1. Learn spelling and grammar.  If you're from another country, I'm sorry, but most people here are from English-speaking countries.

2. Or you could just run WINE.  Also, VALVe has plenty of servers for Linux.  But IMO Linux sucks as a gaming platform anyway, and represents about 10% (IIRC [if that]) of market share, so if I were a game company exec I wouldn't bother making Linux games because

A. The profit probably wouldn't make up for how much it would cost to hire the programmers to port it

B. Linux users could just run the game on WINE.
ot changing this sig until I get Spore
