Ur-Quan Masters
« on: March 25, 2011, 11:51:53 pm »
I have seen that people in this forum (like Qrntz) have played this game, and today, upon visiting their sourceforge page, saw this, dated Wednesday, Jan 17 2007:
Quote
You may have noticed the presence of an increasingly large number of bugs which move with great speed and attack relentlessly. We are sorry to say that this is our catalog item UQM-0.6.1.
Yes, we've moved beyond the bugfixing stage into the lucrative bug creation phase. It seems that our bugfix release in fact introduced a new bug.

So now, we have 0.6.2.
In 0.6.2, you can save your game and supermelee fleets again, which is good.
And there are a few bonus small fixes, which shouldn't hurt anyone either.

The game data is still unchanged, so you won't have to redownload that, and you can just install 0.6.2 over 0.6.0 or 0.6.1.
You can find it here.

Have fun again,

The `The Ur-Quan Masters' development team.
I just want to thank the guys at piginatophat darklegion development for not going through this lucrative stage. Thanks!

I'm not sure what else to do with this topic. Discuss the Ur-quan's strange eating habits? Just talk about things generally related to the game itself.

<3 ur quan

it's a damn shame that genera has died out, save for a few small but dedicated independent developers.  back when i was a wee RAK i got hooked on the bastard child of star control, starflight.  specifically, the genesis port.  i'd prolly kill for an actual star control 3.

Huh, SC3 was pretty awful. It wasn't developed by the same people who did SC2 and it came out really awful. Also, Mycon in it are somewhat talking vaginas and I honestly preferred them to be fungi. Also, Syreen aren't even fappable.
You're not losing anything if you didn't play it, believe me. ::)
About UQM - it's a bit sad they halted development at 0.6.2. No, the game has all the features of the original SC2, but no nameable saves and a few bugs in addition. Other than that, very playable and re-playable. Brain once said it's like mass effect, but has better graphics, lol.
Interesting enough, their forum is a little bit active even today.

If someone's ought to play a round of UQM with me, I'm not afraid of telling my IP. Just in case, PM.

SC3 stuff

yea, i TRIED to play it, but shit sucked.  thus the comment about wanting an actual sc3. not the trash that was provided us.  i would play you, but i am incredibly rusty, even the "average" CPU can whip my ass right now.  give me a few days or a week or so to brush up.

Don't worry, I didn't play a long time too, so actually it's okay. ;)
Also depends on the ships.

started a new game a few days ago, playing intermittantly.  decided to go recruit the ZPF.  bad idea.  ran out of fuel and had the kor-ah kick my ass.  good news is that i can take a kzer-za with little risk with fwiffo's eluder.  bad news is cant take 4 kor-ah with it.

Lol. Bad idea really, counting they won't die out all of a sudden. I went to became their saviour a few months after the broadcast.
You'd better were insulting the lonely Shofixti. :P
I believe you can beat them... though with a bit of practice. Eluders are surprisingly powerful against large ships.

oh yes, i love flying the eluder. only a few ships i like more, but most of them are not really available in the story.

a problem that i had with that little journey was that i hadent recruited the spathi yet, so i could not build more eluders.  that's been taken care of now, though i wandered into orz space, and managed piss them off.  my flagship was not upgraded enough, and all i had was one cruiser and fwiffo's eluder.  not the best setup to take four orz. i now know to avoid that section of space for now.  perhaps i'll search out the pkunk, as furies are mighty fun to fly.

going at it without a walkthrough has become a process of trial and error.  my only real hope is to stumble across enough planets with life to gain enough credits to get the lander upgrades from the melnorme.  all the good mineral rich planets i've come across are rife with fire, earthquakes, and storms.

perhaps i'll putter around neutral space untill the spathi are back on spathiwa and i can get the hyperwave caster to get the ilwrath moving to the thredash and save myself a lot of grief getting to the pkunk.

It's been ages when I played this last time... Oh the amount of time passed when played this.

Eluder is the best, once you manage to learn controls and such. For those who ain't for trickies, Juggernauth is the best, if you don't like tricky stuff (best for newbies I say). You're almost unbeatable when you master it.

Also, one good trick is to get ur-quan warp device (don't remember full name), and bring it to arilou, to move faster in galaxy... ;)

These are quick tips/insights I remember.

Do you mean the Utwig ship? AFAIK it's officially called Jugger but lots of people don't care.

i dont really like the jugger, myself.  i'd rather fly a podship for the points.  against most ships that is. i'm also kinda partial to the torch.

The supermelee is fun against a human player but a computer is very predictable and always is the aggressor. Being aggressive is bad in this game because it means the defender in practice has longer range on his guns if the gun shoots projectiles. This means some ship combinations just don't work in human vs human though. Spathi vs spathi for example can take ages because neither wants to be the attacker. Kohr-ah duels on the other hand can be very interesting because the weapons have unlimited range and you can make minefields with the razor blades.

Good point here.
Actually yes, taking out AIs while abusing planet gravity/inertialess drives is a trivial thing.
Another interesting [IMHO] combination is humans fighting with Torches. Fine afterburner control wins.
