Link to building tutorial on denybuild message
« on: June 05, 2011, 06:22:54 pm »
Could we add to the denybuild message a hyperlink to a build tutorial?  It could be a tinyurl or something - I just think it would help new players understand what constitutes poor building (floor trappers, etc.) and how to improve.

Thanks,

PS. Also, it would be great if we could make the distinction between a malicious denybuild and a noobbuild.  If a noobbuild command was called on a new player, they would be banned from building for 7 days and directed to a tutorial.  Just an idea.

Why seven days? What if they don't read and follow the link (which a lot are bound to do) and don't learn? Another seven days after that? I would think that a day at most would be fair, if mods are around each time. Consider some of the players who suck at the attack/defend strategy, who've also become superb at building strategically just by practicing, albeit sucking a lot in the process.

I agree - and I probably shouldn't have included that second part as it is a whole different feedback topic.  Point being - what do you guys think about a link to a build tutorial in the 'denybuild' box that comes up when you are denybuilded?

Can denybuild/mute/etc be tied into the same system as bans lasting for multiple days?

Building tutorials are something that are rather hard to do, because I find that some of the most effective bases are largely conceptual. The four door on Niveus, for example. If we could get a list of base locations, though, we could put together a string of videos on YouTube showing players how to build the most basic of bases on each default map for S1. We'd have to cover every common expo as well as rebuilding and fortifying the main. I think it would be best to discourage "experimentation" and stick to presenting a "black and white" "this is how you do it" type guide catering to absolute newbs. The last thing that we would want is horrible builders saying "well the Official Tremulous Builder's Handbook told me to experiment!"

If a video guide(s) were to be made, narration would be a must. It's more effective to have a voice along with the video rather than plain text. Also, perhaps the formation of the Tremulous Builder's Guild would be in order. Just a bunch of folks who are dedicated to helping newbie builders and keeping the guide(s) relevant?

And if it wasn't obvious, this idea has my complete support; anything I can do to help get it off the ground.

Anybody who has this happen to them will never play again.

[17:05] <Frankeileen> which is more effective, teaching people the qualities of a good base, or how to build specific bases?
[17:07] <Who-[Soup]> experience through trial and error?
[17:07] <Undeference> only non-stupid reason i know of for http://ddos-tremulous.eu/projects/hguide/066e.jpg is to build in the hall, which you can do anyway
[17:09] <Frankeileen> t&a results in a lot of pissed off players and /callvote denybuilds
[17:10] <Who-[Soup]> people get so upset over a game
[17:10] <Who-[Soup]> maybe we should make a guide to help with that
