A Tremulous Movie contest?
« on: August 08, 2006, 02:40:38 pm »
Who wants to have a movie contest?  :D

There are 2 reasons why I belive it would be cool:

1.  It would be awsome to view a movie that has good music, camera action, and that shows the best of Tremulous.

2.  It could really help people to know this game.  I can upload the winner's video in my profile on Gamespot and to other places.  Recently one of my video's of another game on Gamespot got featured on the front page, which means now not only are alot of people viewing that video, but I have people tracking my submissions now, which makes me feel like i have a responsibility to upload videos, and want to spontaniously advertise some open source projects i know about  :P

So what do you think?  Ive seen some really great music sync and camera work from other games in thier video's, and I think tremulous would make an exelent game to have a game video of that kicks ass.

Some rules though would have to be that its in a standard video format, less than 10 minutes, and less than 100MB large.

Great idea! although i think we need to do this with some aditional aplications. Could you post few? Fraps is not good and you can't cut or add music with q3 recording.

FWIW, I have yet to see many great Trem movies. Tremulous Promo II is pretty much the only one worth mentioning. And that came out in 2006. Sorry if I'm missing any others.

What makes a video good?
* It should be short (around 3 minutes or shorter).
* The rhythm of music should go well together at all times with the flow of the scenes.
* You can't just throw together action scenes and hope you get a good video, you'll only get random scenes put to music. You need to think about the flow of the images.
* The video should have a message. Either one that derives from the music, or "trem is cool", but it should be something that is passed on to the viewer, a mood, a feeling if you want.

Look at the video I mentioned: it has a balanced mix of both alien and human point of view, it has spectator fly-by's, it has building, slow motion and time-lapse scenes, taunt animations, captions etc. A good video takes a director and good editing, not just cut and paste.

What would you all think if my director friend and I threw together a live action short?

I'd think you're nuts, unless you somehow have created dretches.

Hmm... "created dretches". Now that gives me some ideas. How about a few small animals and some creative costumes/finger paint? Frogs come to mind.

I do feel that this topic has diverged from the original idea but what the hell, it would be worth to see a live action film of a marine shooting frogs with a BB gun.
