demo lag
« on: July 09, 2011, 02:06:39 pm »
When recording demos, it is easily noticable in playback that it looks like the server recorded it, not the client. I have lots of proof in videos i uploaded to youtube [inbox me, i want to keep my identity from some people that particularly hate me, for example those aussie aussalt guys/gays] , showing that my lasgun is actually far awaaay from the target, and i hit him. If i find the time to record and live-record at the same time from 1.1 as an example (gpp cancelled live video recording  >:( , i want it back!), you will be able to see the big difference in the lag. Live recording shows me aiming slightly ahead and missing every now and then, while the demo - then - video record recording is quiet far behind.

For those tl;dr people:

Can the /demo record client-side, or actually plays in the exact (timing) form from the actual gameplay?

One solution is to create a command... e.g.

/liverecord: [records what YOU see in a demoformat as .dm_71]

/video: Bring back the /video for live video recording... and set some options so the playback won't be zizzy fast

/cg_clientplayback/cg_liveplayback/cg_realtimedemo or whatever shit, you devs do it: [default 0 for normal]

Or something similar...

Tremulous has always recorded what you see, not what the server sees. End of story. Get your shit straight before complaining about stuff that isn't even true. And stop complaining about every little thing.

but a small twisty barrel will have small pew pew's, and small pew pew's can hurt mr.tyrant.

I feel confined by the Earth's science to make up a term for having no idea about what do you ask about. Seems what we have here isn't an example of Down syndrome, aphasia or schizophasia but does show a case of severe neural disorder.
Gentlemen. What about calling it... The Lolrandomsaladmongoloid Virus.

'ViruS' made an assumption about what was going on. No need to get insulting over it.

What you're seeing in the demos is what I've noticed in-game. You have to shoot where the target was rather than where you see it. I regularly aim behind a target in such a way that the crosshair never passes over where I see the enemy, and hit.

I haven't found anyone who can confirm this. People have told me it isn't true. Don't take my word for it. I'd be happy for someone to prove me wrong.

i believe you.  perhaps a side effect of unlagged.  you dont actually aim at me, and i see me getting past the corner, but when unlagged sorts it out you shot me before going around the corner.... something like that.

I live-video recorded, it shows me aiming ahead, at the same time while recording a demo... In the demo, it shows me waaay behind. I even got killed by a marauder about 8 metres away! (for those mappers, ~200 units)

Another evidence is that if you play on a high ping server with unlagged, for me it is every server except SIR server, if you fire the lucifer cannon while a dretch is close up to you, i have to either turn around and shoot infront of me (splashes happen with lag for some reason in gpp, in 1.1, the bullet just fires later), or i shoot DIRECTLY at the dretch. Otherwise, the dretch will 'walk over' the bullet and my bullet exploding two thirds of a second later on my screen. This is one reason why i don't use lucifer cannon anymore.

When you play the demo on the other hand, it looks perfectly normal, seems like you shot the lucifer cannon and it warps in a way...

I can also prove the same thing for the adv goon, as in the demo i fire 'too behind'.

I'm sorry if I bother your life too much.

I had forgotten about this, but yes I've noticed a difference between demos and what I remember happening during play, too. Sometimes this means piling many shots pointblank into a dretch, missing, and only when viewing the demo do the misses make any sense. Also I've failed to see hiding enemies that were in plain sight in demos. Due to the subjective nature of all of this, it's hard to prove that it isn't just me failing to view a live situation correctly. The nicest evidence would be a video recorded with fraps to compare against the a video of a demo but sadly this means unplayable fps on my crummy computer.

i'd do it, but i dont have the HDD space for recording demos.  yes i know how small they are, but i'm on a temporary hard drive with only 6GB total, and my OS and other stuff takes most of that up.

it also might be a little more helpful if someone with a higher ping did it.  i somehow zero-ping, so i think it would mainly showcase "getting hit through solid geometry".

i'm sure i have the CPU power to record the demo and use an external recording utility.

I'm pretty sure this is an error with displaying ping, or timestamps, or something. You don't really have 0 ping, whatever it says.

Well, someone understands me. The best way to prove the lag is by going on a high ping server. IT doesn't really matter if it is unlagged or not. When i play KoRx officials, or {MAD} on gpp (somewhat unlagged turn off, although it says it is on), i chase a human from behind as a dretch, in normal 1.1 my dretch would bite, but in gpp or korx mod, nothing will happen. I can't walk any closer because i am 'already touching him'. In the demo, it turns out i am waaay far away from him, and same thing is viewed by spectators.

I had that before, it is super high ping, at a unknown rate. I have it when my internet is really slow, soo slow that it says internet connection interrupted, but i see people moving and talking, but i can't talk back.

most likely, though my average ping is about 20.  mebbey 30 if there is a lot of "local traffic".

old post... but i am here to prove that demo has lag in it. Recently, i've done my first tremulous live recording on gpp (as people will complain that 1.1 is 1.1, which is 'old' blah blah blah...

Anyways, what i have done is i got quicktime and did a live-record (sound's shit, because it records through mike. I can't find any other way to do it...) at the same time while doing a /record command.

Live demo is the one that shows my mac's background around the window and stuff... you should be able to tell. It is the one with shi* quality. It also shows the record button.

The 'Demo' demo is the one with higher-quality picture and sound, and it shows '12 fps' or something really low, and it shows the play button.

Link will be up in a few hours, or days, depending on how long it will take to upload. Right now, it says 16 days remaining. Slow internet... I'll edit this post once i got at least one or two of those videos up on my channel.
