a question about maps
« on: July 19, 2011, 05:36:04 pm »
putting this in off-topic, as i am unsere of where it should go.... it's more a community request than feedback to the development team, and it is a question to mapmakers, not a question of how to make maps.

why is it that all the maps are of human environments?  i'm just curious.  all of the maps i'd consider compatible with the concept of the game are obviously (to me at least) human environments the aliens are invading.

so.... why dont the humans every try to be proactive and take the fights to the aliens?  mapwise, of course.... i know why they camp =D

One reason can be summed up with a simple question: What exactly does the alien homeworld look like?

The 'aliens have infested the space station' idea is a classic one and so we have a lot of previous work to build our ideas from. From what few examples of 'alien homeworld' I can think of (especially in games) I've only ever seen rather silly looking places for the sake of looking 'alien', or else they just look like earth.

I guess the biggest problem is that the aliens don't look like they could build human-like structures, so how do you make something look 'natural' and still be contained and room-like enough to function as a playable map?

Making models look organic requires a lot of faces, it is much easier to just make a cube and call it a day.
What do you get. When combine. Deuterium pellet. Terrawatt laser.
And primitive Earth leader from Asian steppes.
ANSWER.
KHAN. FUSION.

Basically this.
Organic stuff is hard, man-made is easy.

why does it have to be organic?  the structures do creep for you.... perhaps you could texture creep over the top of rock.

it does not have to be the alien's homeworld, perhaps just some floating spacerock where they have some sort of buildup.

hrm... perhaps when i get some spare time and hard drive space, i might set about learning how to make such a thing.
