its called lag.
dump the 56k modem, and get a real internet conection.
also read the manual.
play servers with a low ping (<100 is good)

I had a friend trying tremulous for the first time (and he's not really a "computer person"), well, he was playing trem and downloading stuff with ares AND updating the antivirus. He was like "OMG, THIS THING IS SO SLOW, i'm going back to counter strike!" (oh yes, the pain..)

What did we learn today? people is stupid and tend to judge things early.

Btw, i think <150 ping is still good for playing (for starters, not hardcore proxxorz of course)

Wizard's first rule : People are stupid.

;)
urphy's rules of combat
8 ) Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at.
18 ) Make it too tough for the enemy to get in and you can't get out.

I prefered his 'people is stupid' XD

But don't blame their braincell-count. They just aren't well informed, is all.

there r other times when the screen just freezes not b/c of lag or anything
the screen shows 60 fps and evything just looks as if no body is moving But the gun stilll wavers a bit. I usually just quit out. Rly weird.

oh and i dont use a 56k modem

If your gun is still moving, it's lag. People will stop moving because your client is no longer being told that they are moving. (Although they may flail their legs around)
You should be able to return to the main menu and connect to a different server, or perhaps reconnect to the same server.

I think if you set your connection speed correcttly in the options > system > net & sound menu it should help. (It's set to 33.3kbps by default)

EDIT: Removed reference to problems with dial-up
