Ran fine before, wont work now
« on: August 10, 2006, 04:13:55 am »
Code: [Select]

CPU    : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 2.79GHZ
GFX    : S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR 32MB @ 1024x768 (60HZ)
512 Ram
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Ok I got this game and it ran fine then I formatted my computer and tried playing again and it has gone really really laggy.  I will get ping spikes all the time and it’s really annoying.  When I open the game up first thing I notice is that the mouse is even laggy when I’m in server select, another thing I notice is when I move the mouse in the game it freezes a lot but I can still run and other times I freeze but I still see everyone else moving around doing their thing.

I tried playing by myself on local and it is just as bad with the mouse lag thing, it wont move for a while but let me run then it will snap back to where it should be.

I've got the latest driver for my graphics card and I don’t know what to do.

Did you install VIA's Hyperion Pro Driver Package? I not so sure you did if you say you just installed the video card drivers. (This is assuming you have one of the following K8 chipsets: K8T800, K8T800Pro, K8M800, K8M890, K8N800, K8N890, K8T890, K8T890Pro, K8T900, which I'm guessing you do due to the ProSavageDDR).

This is the driver I installed http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/s3proddr.html.  How can I find out if the driver you said is right for my computer?

It should be fine, the driver is for all via based boards made after 2002 pretty much. This and this explain it.

I'd venture a shot into the blue and say that it has nothing to do with your s3, nor your driver.

Go and check the settings for networking .)

I changed it to fastest and the internet part in the options to isdn.  In a local game with myself I get the mouse not moving problem but less of it, but in a game on a server(my ping was around 100 - 150) it just goes unplayable.

- dont join a server with a ping over 100
- set all you gfx-tweaking down to lowest
- killall services / progs you are running, _except_ trem
- switch the display of trem down to at least 800
- take note of your fps, try tweaking this

The problem is your S3, the savage was never ment to be used with a 3d-game .) so your cpu and ram have to make up for it .)

Edit: get rid of any desktop-background picture .)

I set system options i set it to fastest on a really low display, i've got nothing running in the background and it has all these problems on a local game with only me.  The thing that really confuses me is before formatting I didn't have to change anything and it ran fine on the highest setting with a playable amout of lag.

That's why my 3. point .)

Killall services /progs you don't need, like dcom, update, rpc and the like.
in short, streamline your system.

on another note...

try those:

seta com_soundMegs "24"
seta com_hunkMegs "256"
seta com_zoneMegs "24"

maybe it is only the game loading some stuf .)

try to rename the autogen.cfg and retry.
is your problem with mouse only?
is your mouse USB? maybe you can try these adapter USB to ps/2.
other quake games have this problem on your comp (ET, etc)?.

I have no other games installed and I started fresh by unzipping the game again.  Im not sure if update runs in the background and im not to sure on those other things but I had nothing else open.  Im sure its not my mouse because its laggy like.

Well. You may install other games. If there also problems on other games. Is not Tremulous related. So you can discard this and will be much easier to fix.

Hmm, that's too bad about the 4in1's. 9 times out of 10 thought that was why people would have crappy performance after installing windows on a S3/VIA board (This was a couple years ago tho >.>). Teiman has some good ideas, it'd be really handy if you'd install another Quake3 based game. (Enemy territory is Q3 based and free, let us know if its got the same issues.
