Something Sad
« on: April 16, 2012, 01:49:31 am »
Norfenstein, Stannum, The Sound Team, and possibly others have put a lot of work into trying to get 1.2 over the line. I'm just really sad that this seems to have been wasted. I know that Stannum's models might live on in some of the forks, and the same for Norf's GPP work but I'm actually very disappointed that Timbo has abandoned the project, I bet he doesn't even read the forums or appear on IRC anymore. Tremulous is essentially dead, and that makes me sad.

Well, yeah. Development on the original Tremulous slowed down for a while, until it just stopped. The thing is, a lot of the developers have moved on with their lives. Some of them are in graduate school, others are busy with real life issues, like stressful jobs or families. Five years ago, many of them were probably very enthusiastic, but enthusiasm doesn't last forever. This was a hobbyist project to them, something to do in their free time. They put a lot of work in, and even if they never reached 1.2, I still think they did a great job. The fact that members of the community have banded together to produce a fork of Tremulous, and ultimately a new game, should be seen as a testament to the hard work that Darklegion Development put into Tremulous over the years, not as something sad.

Honestly,I think Tremulous is halfway dead because most people from Trem move to Minecraft and start clans and stuff over there but..Who knows maybe in the future trem will get bigger :P There's always Maybe ! :dretch: ;D . It's been a really long time :/ so ofcourz its slow like what 5 6 years?Maybe 7?

@kharnov, I suppose you're right. It, like so many open source projects are a free time hobby thing. I guess at some point I'd like them to admit that it's over and update the IRC and make an announcement that development for 1.2 has stopped.

The forks will live on, and that's a good thing I suppose as SillyRabbit pointed out.

I guess if it's dead then maybe the master server and the forums should make moves to close down too. I don't know if anybody actually plays 1.1 any more. All I see is perhaps some people playing GPP, but then I'm not sure of that either. I know the Australian servers seem to have died.

There's a small active group on GPP that plays on the US Main server, but even they're dwindling. You're Australian, right? Perhaps you'd recognize Sixthly? He's one of the developers in the Unvanquished project.

Did you get my private message?

People still play both versions. I've checked how 1.1 is going a week ago, there were many people playing X/M/W servers and quite a few at AA too. They all seem to be modded though (X doesn't need explaining, but rant's claw range seems ridiculously long at AA). I actively play GPP, everyday you can play quite a few large (12 vs. 12+) games. Not much really, but currently that's the best we currently have.

Clan {Jo|So} were clan {No|Shows} at todays war between them..

The Magma Warriors are pissed off you wasted our time, and I have decided I will DOS attack your server, I have a program for that. Unless you want to get your asses on, and do a 3 on 3 or 4 on 4.

:(

Just logged back in to check on the status of Tremulous.

Ah well.

All 1.2 was waiting for was sounds, right?  I wish at least 1.2 could have gotten out before it died down this much.  Although I can usually get a game on one or two of the GPP servers.  Haven't tried 1.1 for a long time, but last I remember the mods were doing pretty well.  (I even liked some of them quite a bit I remember.)

42, where'd you get those stats from?
I don't know if anybody actually plays 1.1 any more. All I see is perhaps some people playing GPP, but then I'm not sure of that either. I know the Australian servers seem to have died.
I don't think there ever was an australin server. Theres still more aussie players on 1.1, lately i've only counted about 5 names i know of that has played in the past week(not month), and some other people i barely know and can't remember. On gpp, pretty much all aussies i know of have not been online for the past half year excluding the ones i've "recruited". I showed trem to some of my friends to play, you might know Mr.Cat and zinedine_16(however you spell is name...)Zinno's pretty much left trem for now as he is stubborn, but he said he might return once UV/TremZ actually releases a 'full version', not a beta... Apart from them and some other people, pretty much almost no australians play trem-related games currently.
Recently i've noticed over the past holiday of two weeks (our australian holiday might be different to North hemi) that the masterlist in 1.1 has dropped from 80 servers to 68 servers all of the sudden. In gpp, SiR clan server is no longer up, meaning i cannot have fun with goon pounce or rant charge ever again possibly. My masterlist shows US official is the lowest server, with 300-380 ping and lots of americans can 'only play' on low ping servers under 150. At the start of last year, i think gpp had 25-15ish servers or something, and 1.1 had about 120. Also, max players i've seen this year in 1.1 is around 28 on W and last year with about 40. Two or three years ago, i swear i saw a server with 60 players on it. With these dropping numbers, i estimate that trem will go to its near-death around 2014-5. When i say that, the 1.1 masterlist would look like gpp masterlist, gpp masterlist... well i can't really estimate that, because i haven't noticed much difference in player change.

Great, i overdid it again. I think you all tl;dr'd that.

The interesting part is that whatever happens to the community because we're looking at that graph will be the next thing that appears on it.

It's pitiful regarding development.
I have been working 7 days a week for a long time -- I don't have time to animate or otherwise help.
Others have the same issue.. The engine is done, the assets are almost there and it just needs one guy to finish it.
I haven't played Tremulous for months, I'd love to come by and see 1.3 or such.

I've noticed something... you like saying "WRONG" a lot. Please don't hijack this thread into another one of your "WRONG" quote tree's.

It's what constitutes his sense of 'humor'. You'll probably be wasting your time telling a broken record that it's a broken record.
