Hive-KILLAH!
« on: April 27, 2012, 05:57:50 am »
Hey, guys. After a long intermission of technical difficulties, I have finally moved to a place with decent internet and have been getting on the U.S. GPP server as much as possible. Glad to see some people still hanging around.

Anyway, I was curious to find out if my Tremstats had been reset since I last played and noticed something that I couldn't quite process. Specifically, this...

Did I miss something? Because I don't remember ever playing as a hive.

Also, how is everyone? Is 1.2 really dead? Is Kharn still firm?

Exactly how do you get hive kills?

So, despite Granger-Humping a number of active hives, I haven't produced another kill with the structure.

Though, I now have twice as many claw-kills with the Granger as I do with the Goon. So that's something.

At the risk of possibly inciting another rabid Goon-claw debate, here are my current (and wholly unremarkable) trem-stat kills...

What can I say? I likes the spam.

You can get hive kills by triggering a hive as a human and having the swarm kill someone else.

You got that right... i think... I think you need to shoot it first though, then the hive chases you specifically, then have the insectoid die out INSIDE an alien (they go through aliens, but they have limited time before they 'explode' [no explosion or possibly an explosion of a radius 0?, but its a missile function].... no wait, maybe its just a mate meatshielding it... but then you should get a 'teamkill' message... oh im mindfreaked.
Well i've known that humans die by turrets pretty often, but i havn't seen anyone got a kill for it.
Funny, you should get the kill if you crush someone on a elevator/train going up/sideways.

Finally, someone with an answer! Thank you, PhoeniX! You are a pimp and a scholar.

Though, Random ViruS has a point:
Where is the TK message? I'm not really sure if I got ANY message after my Hive-frag, considering I don't even remember when it actually happened, but I'm pretty sure I would've clocked a random TK with my name on it.

I guess there's only one way to solve this riddle...
To the laboratory, a.k.a. GPP-U.S. 1, where I shall test this hypothesis and karate science until it answers me!

to reproduce hive kills, let two or more humans stand on a line near a hive, hugging eachother, as in:
:hive:     :human::human:.
then, a swarm will ideally deal extreme amounts of damage to both humans, while causing one human to kill the other, or even cause an exchange of teamkills.

explanation:
when a swarm touches a human, the following events unfold:
  • the swarm is set to self-destruct after 50ms, and
  • its owner entity is set to the human.
the reasoning behind the owner setting is, according some piece of code, to "prevent collision with the client when returning", which is bullshit ever since kevlarman removed the return-to-hive feature of swarms. the results are multi-fold:
  • the swarm will not touch that human again (that is, at least until the swarm touches a different first!), and
  • when the swarm touches a different human (quickly, within 50ms of the first human impact), then:
    • the swarm will do teamdamage to the second human, and
    • the swarm self-destruction timer will be reset to 50ms again,
thus causing the swarm to be eligible to do more damage to the first human.
  • and this can go on: the swarm can actually go in a loop of doing damage to the two humans.

a couple of notes:
  • swarms absolutely do not deal damage to aliens. hive kills are only as a result of human teamkills.
  • hive teamkills do not result in any TEAMMATE messages, because swarm damage is deemed to be a single-client type damage, having the obituary text of "X was hunted down by the swarm" (ie., there is no such message as "X was hunted down by Y's swarm", let alone one with a TEAMMATE word), and messages for an identified damage type (ie., swarm damage) take precedence over the generic "X was killed by Y" message.
  • there will be no hive kills if multiple humans are not close to eachother. for example, quickly intercepting a flying swarm with a previously-irrelevant human will generally not result in any hive kills.
  • highly ideal results can be achieved using a g_knockback setting of 0.

in my testing, i had 3 battlesuiters stacked up in front of eachother, and 1 swarm managed to kill 2 of the front battlesuiters, and still deal 36 damage to the rearmost battlesuiter.

so the design of the Tremulous game logic is AWESOME(TM).

you need to shoot it first though, then the hive chases you specifically
WRONG.
then have the insectoid die out INSIDE an alien
WRONG.
they go through aliens
WRONG.
but then you should get a 'teamkill' message
WRONG.
im mindfreaked
CORRECT1.

1 grammar aside.

So I can teamkill with hive with almost all consequences, that means the red line on my tremstats graph, negative score and (in case of some servers) negative credits? Sucks.

so, what you are telling me, is that because of this redundant hack, hives suck even more than casual observation would lead you to believe.

The hive is capable of hurting more than one human at a time. How does this make them suck more?

"swarms target the nearest human instead of chasing the same one until death"
Play piggie in the middle anyone?

[1] I did manage to get a team kill message on my custom qvm with hive weapon about half a year ago when 'having fun' with it. But thats different, it says 'was killed by TEAMMATE ... instead of 'was [MOD] by TEAMMATE .... But if i kill myself with the hive it says i was killed by the swarm as it usually would instead of killed oneself.
[2] I meant to trigger it from a distance...
[3] It does go through aliens in 1.1 though, i tested it. The kill part doesnt really happen though unless you set the hive to explode upon timeout
[4] See [1]
[5] Honestly, im just a 2 year old genius who knows how to use a dell inspiron 6400 with dual pentium 4 cpus and complains because i can't buy a newer one.

to reproduce hive kills...

Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that, humancontroller. May ra the sun god bless your big beautiful brain. Honestly, that was a more entertaining solution than J.J. Abrams Lost. Almost as logical, too.

Still, there's a part of me that's kind of sad. I sort of miss the mystery, you know?

Maybe the next time the devs are working on 1.2 (because that still happens. Don't correct me or I'm gonna cry and then we're ALL gonna cry, so just DON'T...), maybe you could add some new form of mysterious code for us to discover and eventually decipher.

My suggestion? If you psaw a teammate while you're equipped with a battpack, it heals the teammate. But if you don't stop before they reach 100HP, it TKs them. The charge is super-fast and you don't tell anyone about it. That way, when it eventually happens (most likely at the hands of some noob who won't even realize what he's done. I mean, he bought a battpack for a weapon with unlimited ammo. Clearly, the guy's no rocket science-er),  the teammate will (hopefully) notice the HP recharge and then (hopefully) die immediately after, leaving the player doubting what he actually saw (pun intended, of course.)

Oh! It could even trigger a human injury-groan that's modified to sound lower and almost, dare I say, pleased. And once it's discovered... I mean, tell me you don't wanna watch a bunch of humans standing behind other humans, ramming Psaws into their backside while the other groans with pleasure?

Also just, you know, for the record? I like girls.

To the Devs:
If you decide to implement this idea, don't even tell me. Just wink twice the next time I'm logged on. No, wait. Twice is too suspicious. Just once. You know what?

Don't even wink. I'm just gonna keep trying until it works.
