Jones is dead. Charlie is dead. Cho, Tommy, and all the rest. I watched them get slaughtered right in front of my eyes. Only Sarge and I made it out alive. All my teammates, gone. I wish nothing more than to be back in your arms again.
I hate this job.

The images are still fresh in my mind, though it was nearly 24 hours ago that it all happened; but I'm not going to get into that yet. Having to spend a few hours with a head doctor today made sure that I was completely exhausted of all will to even think about the incident, nonetheless try to put it into words. Maybe that's why they make us go to a shrink when one of our squad mates gets eaten, to make us talk it out so much that we can't even force ourselves to think about it. At least the psychiatrists are profitting off this war, because I'd hate to think that the corporation fat-cats are the only ones.
Still, something needs to be put down now to preface the story that I'll be sure to dictate later. We were getting sent down to mine Phi-Nine, along with the rest of our new troop (which Sarge so nonchalantly decided would be the Green Hawks -- a name much more to my liking than the Iron Wall squad I came from). It was to be a routine miner protection duty, and Phi-Nine wasn't even anywhere near the area that the bug infections were supposed to be highest. We were wrong, oh so wrong.
The bugs were there, alright. They came in swarms and swarms, relentless, unforgiving, vicious. The miners went down first, followed by all of us, one by one. I must've killed dozens of little bugs with my las-gun, and Sarge was single handedly taking down the bigger ones with his chain gun, and drawing his sidearm to take out the little ones so he wouldn't waste a single bullet. The eeriest thing of it all was that this battle-hardened marine never uttered a single word. While I screamed and fired violently, Sarge simply kicked a dead monster to the side and continued on his rampage.
I owe my life to the man.
Though I was bewildered at first exiting onto the transport ship to escape, the rough warrior beside me didn't even remotely seem nonplussed. As long as I'll live, I don't think I'll be able to forget the awkward, yet warm, smile that split his face for a brief second as he slapped me on my back in between my sobs, then offered me a cigg.
"You did good out there, Falcon. Welcome to my Green Hawks."
