Hello Dragoon, My Old Friend… ("Creepypasta, anyone?")
« on: December 05, 2012, 12:08:35 pm »
Trem is sort of my secret obsession.

Not for lack of trying; I’ve shared the game with all of my real-world face-friends and they each gave me a reason why they didn’t like it (“Everything’s so FAST!” “This isn’t as shiny as Blops 2 and therefor unplayable.” “It's cool and all. I just have terrible taste in games and, coincidentally, rather inadequate genitals,” etc.)

I soon realized that if I wanted to share my love of Tremulous with people, you guys were my best bet. Now, even though I rarely have time to even play Trem these days, I’ll still find myself pondering possible base locations and regularly checking the Tremulous.net forums just to see what’s up (also, partly because I’m worried the game is going to vanish if I don’t periodically check in.)

Anyway, the point is:
I’m thinking about writing a Tremulous Creepypasta.

For those who don’t know; a “creepypasta” is essentially a short story that is usually told in some type of internet format (i.e. forum thread, chat-client transcript, etc.) The story's main purpose is to disturb the reader by taking everyday concepts that we all deal with (video-games, cartoons, spy-wear, etc.) and turning them against the main character. One of the most popular off-shoots of the genre is video game-related creepypastas.

What makes Trem such a great candidate is that, even though it’s a real game, not a lot of people have heard of it. Meaning that anyone who reads the Trem creepypasta will probably Google the game just too see if it’s actually real. And after they end up here, they’ll (hopefully) want to try it out for themselves.

And if these new-comers do show up and it's obvious they were led here by the creepypasta story, maybe certain forum-members in on the joke could even start sending them nonsensical PMs about "not asking the devs anything regarding the programmer responsible for designing the Basilik alien-class and who suddenly vanished while 1.1 was still in development."

Unless of course, they want to be threatened with violence and banned from Trem for life. Same goes for not mentioning a player named "Basidick" (guess what class is his favorite...) who randomly shows up on the US1 server and seems impossible to avoid. His k/d is 0/0 because he never actually attacks anyway. Those who say they've personally encountered Basidick all claim to experience the strange events:

1.) He came seemingly out of nowhere, as if was somehow able to clip through walls.

2.) Like a cat toying with a dying mouse, Basidick likes to screw with his victims, suddenly letting them free only to then head-hop onto the escaping human just as they start to sprint away.

What's also kind of strange is that Basidick never talks, not even in response to team-chat. And his ping is always something like "7".

But where things get truly creepy is what happens if you're unable to escape after several rounds of Basidick's cat-and-mouse, apparently he will start to drag the human player away (an ability we're all pretty certain the basilisk class does not, and probably shoucld not, have.)

One person who experience this strange glitch or hack or whatever said he had heard of Basidick and was curious enough about the whole strange phenomenon that he decide to not even try and escape when Basidick made his move.

The map was Tremor and, after dragging this unnamed player down into the lower basement area, Basidick brought him to a section of wall that looked no different from the rest of the basement area. Basidick released it's grip on the human and only then, standing at just the right position and squinting into the darkness between several large pipes, he finally spotted what Basidick had been leading him to...

The unnamed player's (real-life) body was found the next morning, at his computer desk, one eye completely removed from it's socket and a metal potato peeler lodged in the other.

That's just an intro snippet to give you a general idea of what I'm thinking. I have more ideas on the over-all concept of the story but I’ll save those for my reply. First, I’d like to hear what you guys have to say on the subject.

If you’re familiar with the kind of video-game creepypastas that I’m talking about and have any suggestions or ideas about where we could take the story, I’d love to hear them.

Are you intending this 'Basidick' to be a ghost in the machine or something?

'Basidick' is a dick and I hate him.

I enjoyed reading it though I think the intention to bring players to tremulous using a creepypasta is a little circuitous. You'd have better luck just telling people about the game even if most people you did ask didn't like it.

Anyway, I'm hungry for more creepypasta!

[Laptops on the fritz and my phone is being weird about inserting quotes so...]

@hwd
That's one idea I've been kicking around. I've always found Bassi to be the creepiest of the Alien classes. Though I'm open to any and all suggestions.

@Nux:
I'm really glad you dig the idea. A complete outline of the story is coming soon (probably Monday.)

Basidick is a dick!

Okay, so I picked-up an assignment and got kind of distracted (see: drunk.) Meaning “I’ll have the rough Monday” is now “I’ll have half a page’s worth of lead-in by next Sunday.” Still, I’d really like to hear what you guys think of the set-up so far:

What's Wrong with Basilisk?

There’s this free online multiplayer game Tremulous which has been around for the better part of a decade, though Trem (as it’s known on the forums) has remained a relatively obscure title up until now. It’s a first-person shooter with elements of RTS that was initially inspired by the “Aliens Vs. Humans” combat of Gloom, a game which also inspired the Halfelife mod Natural Selection and a number of others. Though what sets Trem apart from other multiplayer A-vs-H games is that it happens to have a particularly nasty “ghost in the machine”; a bit of rogue code that goes by the name of “Basidick”.

See, in Trem if you play as a human it’s very much your standard shooter with a base-building element as well. But playing as an Alien involves a completely different type of combat mechanic. For example, instead of picking between guns and armor-types you have 5 different Alien combat classes to choose from (6 if you’re an idiot and like to fight with the builder.) The cheapest of these classes (not counting Dretch which is free, still you can’t forget about Dretch) is the Basilisk. It’s cost is 1 evo (or “murder-bucks”, as I call them.)

Most new players, when receiving that first shiny murder-buck, will instantly hit the evolve key to see what they can buy. And what they can buy is a Basilisk...

“It’s bigger and stronger than the Dretch and can still wall-walk. Not quite as fast but what’s this? It can GRAB people? Aw shit, son. I’m about to go to pound town on some-I just died.”

Of all the Alien classes, which each take time to learn and far more to master, Bassi definitely has the longest learning curve. Needless to say, new players that are smart quickly learn to save their murder-bucks for a more user-friendly Alien.

It’s strange then that the first class available to purchase would be so unwieldy. It’s almost as if the developers didn’t want players using it at all. So why not just remove that Alien from the game?

The short answer, as I’ve recently discovered, is that they can’t.

I wouldn't say it has the longest learning curve.
For me, it's in this order, highest to lowest time to learn, and if the class has a advance, it's normal counterpart won't be included. This is for trem 1.1 btw, gpp is very much different:
Dretch [What the fuck? I still can't dodge properly.]
Marauder [Hard to manouvre at first, some walls cannot be jumped off, zap can only deal damage over time at close range, and this class is one of the fastest after dragoon.]
Basilisk [Well, most people just go head-on. Obviously in 1.1, there are foot step sounds. You might as well strafe jump to him. Until one and a half years ago, i simply only used basilisk as a weaker form of marauder, which won't work in gpp due to its shorter range and smaller health. Also, grabbing needs to be aimed ahead according to ping. Most people have no idea what I mean by this. People also need to learn that gassing people with light armour [not helmet, some nub put the wrong upgrade in the source code] or battlesuits do nothing.]
Dragoon [Pretty straight forward, pounce to move faster, jump at a human like a cat and chomp away.]
Tyrant [Same as dragoon, only that the controls are different with different effects, only that you can't jump high.]
