It's like the booster is now alien's official healing station, unless someone's willing to afk as a basi.
you dont have to "afk" to do good healing as a basi.  i find it quite easy to balance out "remaining close in order to heal" with "kill humans and human structures".  i find that even in "ninja basi" mode, where you are solo, it is easy to stop for a couple of seconds and top off the health of larger classes as you move around the level.
You do realise that basi grab isn't ping-compensated. In other words, with my ping to everywhere but asia unofficials (dead) as long as a human is running straight, I cannot grab AND swipe at the same time. I have to either:
a) Use basi "like a marauder"
b) Time my grabs ahead, and if I'm lucky, the human would walk into it. Most low-pingers find this really  easy to dodge, just like 1.1 luci balls, except you could say the luci balls won't move. I also would have to stand still and wait for the human to be grabbed, and it isn't ninja-lisking like this. In fact by the time he gets grabbed from my POV i'd be dead on the server anyway. In other words, I have no use for basi apart from healing myself and allies. (Healing allies also requires me to "aim myself ahead" if they move)
what, lag makes it so you can't be a hat?
No, it just means I have no use for it. It's extremely difficult to ambush someone and kill them successfully. I doubt you have any server over 300 ping, but if you do, play as basilisk on it, and you'll see.
GPP balance says "long grab ranges will benifit you..." Heck, only if you're a person with under 150 ping. Over that and 1.1 basi is the way to go, we don't give a crap if the basi makes sounds when it walks.

i ping to EU1 ~200-250, with spikes up to 300 common.  i fund it harder to dodge, but my own movement seem neither easier or harder....  just different.  have to play like someone is in front of themselves by about a third of a second.  i find the grab range is quite helpful.  i dont have to hit them to stop them, and if i stop them, i can hit them at my leisure.

about the worse effect of such high lag is when someone is kind of "flickering" at the very edge of grab range...  end up having several grabs hit and then let go, so it really gives you away and gives them a chance to spin around before you can finalize the business.

mara is definitely easier in high latency, i find myself making hits that really look like misses to me.

i do see your point.  my point, however, was not "basi is desirable to play in high lag" but "basi is not effectively an afk player in high lag.  you can forgo trying to close and make the kill and hold up a human for your teammates to get (especially when you team up with a goon that actually knows how to aim)  friend basi can wear many hats, he knows more than just one trick ;D

If I try for kills, often I only block. I often end up getting tk'd or punted around by those pounce spammers in gpp. One thing I hate about gpp is that a lot of players don't even use left click as a dragoon, like merry christmas.

those are the best goons to work with, just keep the human between you.

dont go for the kill so much as the assist.  long grab range really pays off, especially in corridors where you can make a grab from the ceiling and walls.

playing aggressively yet defensively is also an option, being a self defending forward base.  especially near the entrances of the enemy base.

701 days for Hamstar. My 331 days of inactiveness pale in comparison.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

If I don't post again, it's because I'm trying to not post for a longer period of time than anyone who posts following this post.

being a self defending forward base.
i.e. porta-booster

Honestly, all GPP did to the standard basilisk to my gameplay was made me use it less. The gas' slowlock effect is overpowered when used correctly, and does indeed make grabbing a whole lot easier. I mean, I can take down flame suits if it's BillyRaz0r-Chan

i have fun with it.

fuck some flame suits, though.  cheapass bastards.  that's a good way to get me to rant up when i'm being a friendly basi.  that and massdrivers.

What do we do with those bastard goons that steal kills then?
Since physics are done server-side, the moment a dragoon gets close to me, my predicted position is already wrong. Try shooting "barely" around a corner while trying to fight back against the moving platform you're on with a high ping. You're more likely to hit the wall than anything. Trying to counter that is easy, but not easy when someone's inside your predicted position, and thats when everything fks up.

I'll only go basi if i'm alone, and if the human is alone. Else, I'd just be hindering someone else while they hinder me, or i'll just end up feeding as usual.

In high latency I find myself more often making misses that really look like hits to me (in rare cases, even the "flesh was cut!" sound plays but no damage is dealt). And it's quite stressing when this happens more than once in a battle.

Back to topic: i was over 200 days inactive. Nux, i have to be sorry, that's such a dirty way to beat pros (or you ain't?)

That shouldn't happen. The EV_whatever (event that makes the "flesh was cut" sound) is sent from the server, and unless the server's bugged it shouldn't happen. It's like getting a dretch to bite a teammate, which won't happen afaik because of the conditions that must be confirmed for the autobite to activate through.

Another example is tesla generators. They only hit if they can, and hit dead-on.
However having a turret kill a teammate is a different story.

Anyway, have you ever seen my video "Demo vs Live" clip(s)? It really shows the difference. It's in two parts though, so you have to watch them seperatly, I was going to use them as evidence for my "demo lag" article that no one gave a fk about.

Gee I wonder how I brought that up, what a silly impulsive mind I have there.

Anyway my point is that it is possible to "strike dead on and miss" but you shouldn't get a confirmed hit error sound. I have many times, had a swiping sound occur more than 3 times, but that only happens if I clip into the enemy and get those prediction errors.

fuck this shit; i put off saying "WRONG" up to the point where now, someone else has provided explanations. oh well, regardless...

WRONG.

it is, because it shouldn't happen at all.

Although I did kinda explained it horribly, you should take the effort to explain why it is wrong.

the explanation was good -- the server tells when a hit occurs, ie., the client does not try to predict hit events. various additional points can be added:
  • when a client receives a hit event (again, this is a notification sent by the server), the client plays a sound (eg., a bullet impact sound) and displays a graphic (eg., an explosion, spark or blood splash graphic).
  • another type of event is the pain event type. it is separate from the hit event type, to allow players to "express" health loss by means other than being hit by an attacker; including, eg., environmental damage (from lava, slime and zap zones) and falling damage.
  • the above events can get lost due to (computer network) packet loss. in this case, damage is "silently" dealt.
  • you may have hit a nearby teammate instead of the enemy, on a server where friendly fire is disabled. in such a case, a hit event is generated, but there is no health loss, so no pain event is generated. this could make you believe that a false hit effect was generated.
  • the above describes the Tremulous of svn.icculus.org. i do not expect that any Tremulous mod has added any hit event prediction functionality. such functionality is even rare among commercial Quake-based games.
