Is Tremulous Dead?
« on: August 27, 2013, 04:14:44 am »
Hi,

Around 2008 and 2009 Trem was one of the best things in my life. Maybe some of you would remember me from Zubs or OPP clans.

I stopped playing for various reasons. But tonight I remembered this amazing game, and amazing people I met through it. I wanted to come back and see how the development and the community is doing. I guess I was a little naive to expect that there still would be an active community for a PC game in the age of game console epidemics and Mac computers.

Although the very quiet main page of tremulous.net gave me a hint, I downloaded the 1.2 version and wanted to see the server list myself. There was only one server up, in which there was only one guy playing humans by himself and kept jumping to his death :( I was VERY depressing.

I am wondering what is the current situation of the game and the community, and wanted to post something to the forum and ask.

Any information is most welcome. Thanks in advance!

If this does not read 'zero' then it isn't. We're (still) dying though.

Maybe trem's got so boring people only like hvh games nowdays.

I do mod trem still though, I have a sad life.

There are other games out there that are based off tremulous, such as Unvanquished (forked off TremZ, TremZ had serious copyright issues, done by Volt, you may remember him) and Murnatan. Murnatan was originally called Tremulous2 but was renamed due to licensing issues, and was initiated by Rotacak.

Murnatan (with trem2 assets, I haven't seen any new ideas popping up that aren't tremulous-related) looks good but lacks the game. It is being developed on the Unreal engine and has "paid" (not sure anymore) developers. They're lacking funds now though due to the copyright issues and the lack of support.
Unvanquished has a game but somewhat lacks visually since we're still on the quake 3 engine (ish - actially a fork of the openwolf engine, a mod and fork of the E.T. engine).

As for Tremulous GPP - It's R CZ/Edge's zone now (I think EDGE was brought down actually haven't touched gpp for a while) and the official servers are down.

So 1.1 is the main gameplay center these days.

I really like tremulous, the gameplay is not like others. Natural selection 2 just sucks in terms of gameplay compared to tremulous IMO.

Back to the topic, in a realistic sense tremulous is dead. Or rather totally freeware games(No Pay to win bullshit or microtransactions) such as tremulous are long dead/overdue.  Nowadays developers just ask for money on even the most simplistic games.

So again, yeah its dead.  :'(

short answer: it is dead
long answer: it is currently under development however a stable standalone version which contains new changes and media is unlikely to be released anytime soon. If you are just a player, it is practically dead. If you are a fan, push your head back in the sand and repeat "it is not dead it is not dead it is not dead ....".

Hey meren, you can check out some other projects which are trying to keep tremulous or the spirit of tremulous alive like Unvanquished and Cuboid. Tremulous is basically dead however. You can still catch some games on 1.1 on good 'ol AA. GPP only has unlimited BP servers last I checked.
