Community Effort to Revive Tremulous and Release the Next Version
« on: September 18, 2013, 04:29:35 am »
Due to unwillingness of the developers to release a new version and little to no code changes in 3 months, I propose you to release the next version as a community project.
Project is focused on media. Currently, there is no plan to change any code.
Thus for the first step we need binaries for all possible platforms.

We need the following changes for the initial release:
* As you all know, we need(ed) new sounds, which are more or less complete.
* (If possible) View weapons as demonstrated by the original modelers, AFAIK they were released.
* GPL'ed version of Evilair's textures
* (If possible) LoD/simple models
* modified data structure:
* * data-core-xxx.pk3 (contains everything except qvms, map textures and maps)
* * data-textures-name-xxx.pk3 (contains map textures)
* * map-name-xxx.pk3

You may add/remove changes for the initial release.
After a working initial release we may proceed to polish it.

FYI, This is just a call. I am not going to do all these myself. Also, don't think me as the leader of this effort. IMO this does not need any leadership, just some coordination.

* GPL'ed version of Evilair's textures
code is GPL'd, art is creative commons'd

Nope. Democratically developed games are prone to deadlocks and politics. You need to find a trustworthy leader.

@RAK I'd also prefer CC-BY but author states that they CC-BY-NC-ND licensed on his site(yet he did not update the text in the zip files which is something like CC-BY-ND). IMO, GPL(previously released under it for nexuiz) will be a more permissive alternative.

@celestial
You might be right however this is not a game development project. This is rather a gathering project. There will be no code changes unless absolutely necessary(at this stage). We will gather what has been released so far then fill the missing parts.

Anyway, you may point me to the new sounds and models if you want to help.

Is the Mercenaries Guild still alive? They have been quite active in Tremulous development and I think they could help bringing the next version together in an organised way.
I'm gonna procrastinate tomorrow...

The next version of Tremulous can really only be released by DarkLegion. All the community can do is release a 'community update'.
Nothing ever happens.

pro tip: distributed development.
You need to find a trustworthy leader.
what if the worst one is already in charge (ie., kharnov, etc.)?

If I am correct, most of the new models/sounds can be found in the unvanquished project. If their license allows, I suggest using them. We can even make use of the new opengl2 renderer.

the UnV _human_ models are decent enough, but the alien models look less good than a floppy donkey dick.

unless they scrapped that entire art style since i stopped giving a shit.

Don't make me list someone worse. Also, this is quite irregular of you to label 'kharnov' as the worst, but with 'etc.'

'Bout time someone agreed with me in some way on a forum. Most people who I asked and give criticism don't do it on the actual forum hence my ideas of the aliens didn't have support. Also, the animations of some models are either robotic or weren't implemented properly (i.e. shifting animation types/poses in an instant without any smoothing. Actually tremulous did have this issue as well but it wasn't that noticable, such as dragoon's taunt animation)

By the way, weren't those old md3 aliens in unvanquished planned for 1.2 anyway? I honestly don't see a  need to change our current models since there's no licensing issues, are there?

I was thinking about weapon models by stannum. Though, we may also use any other model that doesn't look awful. However, we may not use any of the alien models even if only one of them looks bad.

unv md5 acid_tube converted to iqm; all animations seem to work. I had to change the model scale in cfg.

font(decent hi-tech look and a liberal license which allows the inclusion of ttf)

the fugly aliens, and the stubborn refusal to admit they were fugly is what made me not give a shit about the project.

if it MUST be changed, rather than just improved, model it on something like this -

Bummer! I derailed my own thread?
So, we keep all stock models but weapons which will be replaced with stannum's new models.

Sounds are still a little problematic. It looks like unvanquished is still using the old trem sounds with license problems.

Where can I find the new sounds created? The wiki page was deleted.

Sound is always the problem. No one really tracked them down with care for a long period of time. Now that the wiki AND master.trem.net/list(2)'s list is down, I wonder if this is even worth doing.

I was somewhat planning on modding unvanquished if it ever becomes successful and bring trem as a mod on it anyway, but licensing issues is always a problem. I never really liked the 1.2 vsays anyway, the bsuit sounded like it's  pitch was just shifted down using audacity in like 10 seconds worth of work.

edit: Can we rename this to "1.3" instead, because people already refer GPP as 1.2 and it's just confusing the shit out of nabs who don't track our history.

sooner or later it is going to happen. I might accompany it with tremulous classic mod which will bring most of the 1.1.0 gameplay to new version.
