Looking for a team to make a Tremulous mod
« on: August 25, 2006, 08:03:32 am »
Hi there I'm a beginner 3D Modeler, I downloaded
Tremulous about a month ago it's a really unique game well..
besides the Half life clone, but I was wondering what would it take
to make a mod for Tremulous? Obviously you would need coders
and etc, but if there's anyone out there that could explain the
concept to me a little better or if there's any other talented
modelers, textures, animators, programmers audio composers
or map creators out there ( We would need a team leader)
maybe we could get together and make a mod for Tremulous.

I was thinking of adding maybe an extra race to Tremulous
or building up/working on the ones that we have now, like
maybe adding a female class for the humans or different human
models and also add some more alien classes
I was thinking maybe making some more buildable objects which would require 2 or 3 people
to build all at the same time. Keep in mind though, this is just an
idea and unless we can put together a talented team
it won't go far at all.

Anyways here's more or less the things I can offer.

3D Modeling and Animation - 3Dsmax
2D Animation - Flash
Web Design - Dream Weaver
Graphic Design - Photoshop, Painter IX
Audio Composing - Fruity Loops

I also know HTML and a little of PHP but not much though

I'm aware that this is all a bit broad so I'd appreciate it if people toned down on the criticism, thanks.

I am interested. I can code something (but I am learning how to code for Quake3) but my level is newbie, so I can't make whatever is the target. But from a pool of features I can pick randownly bugs and small features and implement.
If you create a mail list or something, contact me to join.

The only people who would use the female class.. would be guys.... its not really worth your time and would just complicate the menu.

I don't think multi-person buildables would be that great of an idea.. people can't cooperate as it is, and on small servers you might just have 1 builder.. though I do like the idea of maybe some other builder being able to help another and accelerate a build maybe.

I'd suggest really hashing out the mod idea before making a team.. because if you make a team and you spend 3 weeks working on the idea and nothing gets done people loose enthusiasm quick.

You could do the animations for the new voice commands.

You should stop that part concerning web development and develop some priorities to get good at... ;)

Here's an idea for a feature in the mod: Third-Person. Seriously, this game should be third-person, not first. After trying it out on a local server by myself, I found that it would be extremely fun if everyone were in third-person.

Dany is right, there's no need to make a website for Something which has
yet even been determined for development, like I said we still need coders
and for the moment I think that's the main priority, anyone
who has extensive knowledge with the Quake 2 Engine, C++ or
is quick to adapt to the structure of Tremulous would really be needed.

As for Third person view.. I'm not really sure how that would work
considering Tremulous is a FPS. How would you shoot down the dretches
which are moving along every axis just to get a bite at your head lol
but yeah maybe if you did have the option like in UT to go 3rd person or something.. even though it sucks.

Okay and like I said I'm a bit of a beginner really at Modeling, but I've only been at it for 3 weeks and I'd like to think of myself as a quick learner.

Here's some pictures anyway:

Not sure, I made this a couple hours ago I was testing out the lighting I guess

Just some basic objects on a table

This was my attempt at modeling a head, these are the types of things I'd like to improve on. It's not exactly perfect, as you can see.

Just the basic pilot from the 3ds max 8 tutorials

Not very well.... maybe think of GTA.. but still.. aliens complicate this way too much.. I don't think its going to work out.

So.. what is this mod about? Still making your first idea?.. have an idea?.. Having an idea as i've said before and can't stress enough, is step one... and its good to have step one before you have a team... .. also.. its never to late to buy a C++ book ;)

That's true, but it's not like I'm going to buy a book on C++, spend many years learning it just so I can make a mod for Tremulous. Like I said I'll do the 3D modeling, but  I'm not looking to do the coding aspect of things.

Ideas can lead to places but without a team to create the Idea your Idea isn't going to be a winner, I've stated a few Ideas and I have many more but I'm looking for a capable team which can show some of thier work first. Then we can start on Ideas.

Add crosshairs to every alien. Problem solved.

I still dont see the relation of c++ and quake3. you need to know C. C and C++ are completely different. NO! C is not a subset of C++.

i think you would be better off contacting timbo and asking if there is anything you can do to help.  don't make a mod, improve the current tremulous.
that would be a much better use of peoples time and resources.

You'll need an idea before you start getting people togethr to make a mod. Good luck though.

accrding to wikipedia, you are categorically wrong ;]

The C++ programming language was derived from C and is Bjarne Stroustrup's answer to adding object-oriented functionality with C-like syntax. C++ adds greater typing strength, scoping and other tools useful in object-oriented programming and permits generic programming via templates. Considered a principal superset of C, C++ supports most of C, with some few but relevant exceptions (mostly of stronger typing restriction; see Compatibility of C and C++ for an exhaustive list of differences).

never ever believe to something that is written in wikipedia ;)
even though c++ is derived from C they are completely differen and they are using different libraries. yes you can use C libraries in c++ but this is not a good use because c++ has its own object oriented libraries. and they have different advantages over eachother but one cant say one is better than the other. after all it is like oo is better than procedural or procedural better than oo debate.
if you know c++ this doesnt mean you also know C this just means you know the basics of C -vice versa-
