Coarse Language limiter?
« on: August 26, 2006, 08:40:39 am »
I was wondering if something that could limit the amout of bad words a person can say in a certain time could be implemented. And when the person says more than the limit they get banned from the server or something.
Cuz im really gettin pissed at the amount of ppl who come onto a server and start going "stfu noone gives f*** bout u b***" or something like "go f*** yourself" when u kill them.

BTW im not gonna be here for a week so im not gonna reply to this for a week

So in a game where people routinely have their heads chomped off you are worried about some bad language?

if you are older than 12 yo you will understand what "stfu noone gives f*** bout u b***" or something like "go f*** yourself" mean. So no point of  a wordlimiter

Firstly, noone gets thier heads chomped off, they just die. Secondly, why do you people want to keep swearing allowed, what's the point? Swearing does not add to the game, if anything it detracts from Trem.

Why do you want to limit the language? There are letter combinations in which in english are swearing, but in another language they might be common words. Same thing goes the other way, since the playing community is not restricted to only english people swear words from another language wouldn't be blocked.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

There is virtualy no chance of that.

It wouldn't be hard to make it block out foreign swear words.

Fake blood, fake pain, fake death, real language, real insults. I think that should make it clear.

... I think some of you are missing the point.. this is for people who just stream bad language.. it isn't to kick out those who curse, its for those who can't stop... the annoying agitators with a 5 word dictionary. This is usually indicative of someone who needs to be kicked anyway.

go ahead and put some word filters
for example something changes "fuck/hate" with "love"
but then ppl will write F.Uck/hA.t.e

That why people invented the votekick and votemute. Although it isn't always available but that is a different problem.

Go look at Runescape, hoards of 10/12y olds that are enormously inventive at circumventing the censor (and that censor is pretty big).

The American thing was pointed at:(example) Biggest porn industry on the planet, but a tit on tv is a HUGE scandal.
(You kill humans, you like it when you slash/shoot someone to death, you gain respect and money by doing it but you're scandalized by someone that uses a curse?)

PIE, Isn't that just spamming? (when one does such a thing, it doesn't really matter if he says DAMN or PIE, it's just annoying)

Always calling somebody a fag/mofo/.... when you get killed should be treated as griefing while the usual 'goddamned, you fucking dodged my damn headbites like hell!' is fairly regular and non-disturbing imho.

Maybe it's just me but i grew up and learned a lot of curse-words through internet communities where they're used fairly much in a good way, a friendly way (or at least a non-insulting way)
Learning when and with whom to use curse-words(good/bad way doesn't matter)  is a lot better then to put up a huge censor which will get circumvented anyways...

OT: No Way!
It is either allowed or not, and like almost everything it is depending on the situation and should not be left to a dumb skript/programm that has no understanding of the situation.

If you don't like coarse language, get admins to moderate the server...

If someone adds swears to ever sentence, they are probably a Squeaker. Most players just ignore this type of behavior, but if it gets to far, an admin may mute said player.

One thing i hope tjw implements in g_admin is an IGNORE and UNIGNORE command. Basically, this adds 2 new flags. I for the ability to ignore (default config from tjw should have it on every level), and # for the class that cannot be ignored (say lev 5 admin). The user basically types out !ignore NAME/SLOT, and that user is muted, but not from the server, it is just the message doesnt get sent to the client who ignored said user, but it does get sent to all who didnt.

∧OMG ENTROPY∧

Okay, to make clear some cultural differences...

Germany / Most of Europe:
Alcohol
Boobies
Bad Language

Communists
Violence in Games
Nazi Stuff

USA:
Alcohol
Boobies
Bad Language
Communists

Violence in Games
Nazi Stuff

So at least half of the Trem community won't give a fuck on bad language but will point out violence... ;)
This is just what the general public would colorize these themes, individual views may vary.

Actually it does happens. I remember a limiter in a game who blocked the word "retard". But, in French, "Etre en retard" means "To be late". So whenever we apologised to our French friends for being late, we were muted

That's gonna be even funnier. "Con" is a very common insult in French. Try playing while avoiding the words "Deconnect", "Construction", etc... :P

And that's only one example in my language. I m sure others players can come out with others examples in their own language.

So basically you dont need to discuss whether we should put a limiter or not, because a good limiter is absolutly impossible to do in an international game (and Megabite pointed out nicely another problem for that).

only one problem with that comparison... boobies aren't nearly red enough

if there is a Squeaker, then a good server will have admins who can mute them.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Well, that's the problem with all servers, not always an admin around.
I think each server should have 4-6 admins from different timezones so there is an admin around on at least 20/24h

Its interesting how this turned into a debate about whether this should be done instead of answering this guys question. He didn't ask if you thought it was right, he asked if you thought it could be done and if you know I suspect he wants to know. Its his server, if you don't like it don't play on it, or don't help him out..

WRONG
ANY insult said on the internet is fake.
If you can be offended by someone saying "cunting fuckshit" because they just got a lucy, bpack-helmet-armor and walked into 5 tyrants and died instantly, you're just dumb. :/

And in awnser to the guy's question, yes. Thast could be done.

And make all the players give nice flowers to each other instead of shooting/biting each others head off.
Then we can all go have a cup of tea with a tyrant and hear his stories about how a piece of your teammate is still between his teeth.

Forgive me :(
