Option: friendly units on radar
« on: September 04, 2006, 02:43:49 pm »
Just throwing something out there: maybe there could be a user-togglable option that, when activated, makes teammates show up on your radar also? Teammates would be either yellow or green dots (whichever looks better). That way you could see if teammates are nearby, which'd be useful for humans when retreating. If you were weak you could run towards a teammate in the hopes that he can back you up.

And then in larger games, where all those yellow dots would be distracting, you can just deactivate it. Heck, they could even default the toggle to a button.

Humans already get blue dots for teammates. Aliens desperately need this feature to avoid around-the-corner teamkills.

yeah, aliens need IFF on there radar, its also great for teamwork.

also, it would be nice if alien radar could show distance, possibly shrink / grow the blobs?

Agreed.  I have a radar blob shrinking (opacity too) feature in a GTA2 mod I made for UT2004 and it feels much more polished this way.

there should be alien radar for alien buildings too. So you can find boosters and other buildings easily instead of just looking for your teammate.

I totally agree with this idea. Though it could make a confusion of too many colours.

Why not have it in such a way that for example an alien seeing enemies on buildings would see a red dot for an enemy, and another shade of red for an enemy, and the same for teammates, and also the same for humans (that you can see the difference of buildings and mates, and aliens and alien buildings..

I have to say Natural Selection's HiveSight(TM) system is totally superior to the Tremulous radar , intuitive and never disorienting. It just shows teammates (and tagged enemies) like a wallhack , with sprites that change in size depending on the distance. Teamwork is much easier with the added level map that shows structures , friends and the enemies they see. You never hear "where is the hive ?" because it is shown on the HUD both as a HiveSight sprite and as a location name , not counting the map. Marines have an equally useful HUD :

half the point of a base move is they don't know where you are.
this would totally remove egg hunts.

omfg i just had a great idea.... instead of red dots lets replace them with these!!!!   :acidtube:  :advmarauder:  :armoury:  :barricade:  :basilisk:  :battlesuit:  :booster:  :defcomp:  :dragoon:  :dretch:  :egg:  :granger:  :helmet:  :hive:  :hovel:  :human:  :marauder:  :medstat:  :overmind:  :reactor:  :repeater:  :telenode:  :tesla:  :trapper:  :turret:  :tyrant:

that way u see booster icon and know where booster is.. u can tell if its a battlesuit or not ( even though u should just by sound) buidings can be smaller or not as noticable since it would be a mess playing on servers such as SST with many people and build points but idk maybe play around with sized and add colored boxes around the icons red enemy and blue freindly just to help seperate them more???

anyone like this idea??

OBJECTION

Really, a different colour dot for team mates and team structures might be handy, but a big circle of all those icons around my screen would be almost as irritating as an in-game popup banner asking you to punch the monkey.

I'm not sure how this affects balance though since the human and alien radars work rather differently. The alien radar shows human structures and players in different colours, has realtime refresh but no indication of relative height and remains the same for all classes in all stages. OTOH the human radar distinguishes between entities based only on whether they're human or alien, has a slow refresh but gives relative height indication, and is an upgrade from S2.

Perhaps the aliens could get the friendly entity radar for S2, and the humans can get it in S3? Perhaps the battlesuit can get a friendly entity only radar. The idea being that since they're often used to zerg the alien base with nades and lucispam it's useful to know where you're teammates are (so you know whether you're going to die alone or not  ).

Ah, I'd forgotten that humans have friendly radar. Wow, shows how little I play humans o_O

Maybe in s2 or s3, aliens get blobs that scale depending on the distance, along with teammates on their radar. I also like that bsuit idea, it's helpful but doesn't really make the bsuit any harder to beat.

Another method might be to have a sort of shimmering effect when a teammate moves behind a wall rather than the circle around the outside as that won't tell you he's right around a corner and about to die. You'd just limit it in distance say 10m or so, so that you don't see teammates all over the place and as you only really need it to get an idea of who is around you at the time.
